The Berthon Scandinavia team had a super 5 days at Scandinavia’s largest sail boat show, the Öppet Varv 2020 (Open Yard 2020). This yearly show takes place on the Island of Orust and is hosted by Hallberg-Rassy in their own harbour.
This popular yachting event, now in its 27th year, had to adapt to a different Covid-19 environment for 2020. Social distancing rules meant that only 50 guests were allowed in the harbour at any one time for a maximum of 90 minutes. This, however, did not deter numbers, with yachtsmen from near and far pre-booking appointments well in advance via the Öppet Varv website. A total of 1,652 visitors came to the Öppet Varv, making for a hugely successful yet never crowded 2020 event. In order to accommodate everyone, opening hours were extended and the show ran for 5 days rather than the usual 3. Those who had travelled far were allowed extra visiting time. Food stalls were still serving delicious fare but were set up outside the main venue to manage numbers.
Berthon Scandinavia’s Magnus Kullberg is a yearly exhibitor at the show. However, Covid-19 restrictions meant we only showcased 1 yacht instead of the usual 10, taking a very smart Hallberg-Rassy 48. Was this a bad thing? Not at all! The reduced numbers certainly made for a more relaxed and less hectic show, giving us the time to discuss clients’ yachting needs with them in detail and allowing them to view yachts at their leisure. This is more easily done when hosting only 10 rather than 100 people a day. For Berthon Scandinavia, this new style show proved just as successful as it has been in super busy, previous years. The visitors who had made the effort to attend and enjoy the event were serious about buying a yacht. Team Berthon Scandinavia came away from the show with excellent contacts and huge smiles.
We will most definitely be present at the Öppet Varv 2021. Whatever the Corona Virus status next year, the Hallberg-Rassy yard, exhibitors and show goers all proved it to be an event well worth attending and one which can be run safely. It was also great fun.
Next year’s Öppet Varv 2021 is planned for the usual 3 days from 27-29 August. Information will be available at https://www.oppetvarv.se/en/.
