The Tall Ships Youth Trust ships and yachts are a familiar sight to all of us. They have been taking young people, 83% of whom are disadvantaged or disabled, sailing for over 60 years and are part of the fabric of our sport.
Many of you will remember the SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL and the MALCOLM MILLER, and then the PRINCE WILLIAM and the STAVROS S NIARCHOS. There are 4 x 72ft Challenger yachts now sailing in TSYT’s colours that were once part of the Challenger fleet, which were built in 2000 to circumnavigate the globe against prevailing winds and currents.
TSYT have 2 other yachts in their fleet and deliver enormous good in terms of transforming young people’s lives by introducing them to the sea and all that this entails…
Currently, this great charity touches the lives of 1,200 young people every year, changing their lives forever for the good. They want to do more so there is a plan in the works for a new flagship to enable them to up their numbers by 2023 to 2,400 – doubling the positive outcomes that they provide for the young people who sail with them.
The new ship will be the flagship of the fleet and she will have 24 berths. This is the optimum size for larger groups of young people whilst keeping the running costs affordable, and therefore self-sustaining. The Trust envisages a schooner-type vessel, akin to the Sir Winston Churchill and Malcolm Miller they operated when they first started. She will make a real impact but of course, she will have to be paid for.
The Trust aims to raise £5m which will enable them to buy the vessel, re-engineer the internal layout and buy the equipment needed to ensure she meets MCA standards.
Berthon have supported TSYT for many years and have assisted with the acquisition and sales of their fleet. They are terrific people who do a great job and if you would like to know more about how to support them and help them on their way to their new flagship follow this link –
