Broker’s Comments

From the drawing board of Botin, the most up to date and successful racing yacht designer in recent times, FLING 16 was conceived to be a no compromise winner with capability for all conditions.

Constructed in 2019, by King Marine’s carbon craftsmen, and project managed by top industry professionals. Full prepreg carbon construction with Nomex core gives the yacht ultimate strength and minimal weight.

Ultimately, the comparison with a TP52 will be made and quite understandably so. Of course she is the bigger sibling, however as she is not constrained by a class rule, free thinking in both design, detail and execution is very evident, lower DLR, proportionally more sail area and righting moment amongst others.

The rig is a 3-spreader, high modulus Hall Spars, with EC6 carbon standing rigging, minimizing weight aloft and increasing righting moment.

Sails are all very fresh, as the yacht has been very lightly used. All made by North, in 3Di RAW and top spec running rigging from Maifioli and Southern Rope. In the power department, there are very few gains to be made. For 2020, a smaller mainsail has been constructed to lower TCC for windier venues; however, this has yet to be used.

On board, the twin rudder setup gives her incredible straight-line speed and controllability by having rudders not only move further aft in the yacht, but also orientated more in the vertical plane. The Achilles heel of twin rudder is drag on the windward rudder due to the toe in. This is nullified on this yacht as a system has been designed to allow the windward rudder to ‘float’ to give minimum drag.

Central Coast Hydraulics and Engineering, the go to people for race yachts, have designed and implemented the hydraulic package on board the yacht. It is a reasonably simple and effective solution that runs almost every system on board.

A PTO on the main engine is controlled by a PLC to optimize revs and therefore load on demand. With significantly more power than a troop of Gorillas on the handles.

Trimmers are pampered at the primary trimming stations, ergonomically designed with Harken Air winches, and a bank of buttons to operate the controls, quickly and effectively with the requirement to pump a handle. More akin to the AC45 than the traditional racing yacht.

The hub of the yacht, the pit station is lowered into a well below the line of the deck, saving windage, and helping to lower VCG, simple, effective and powered string drops are the way forward at a tight leeward mark.

Similarly, the main trimming station is simple and effective with a single central pod, and a range of push button controls. The powered runner winches are a godsend for short tacking and have secondary advantages for a secondary sheet winch while coastal racing and a more complicated foresail setup.

Helm is a very comfortable; the twin wheels with adjustable height platforms, with the twin rudders make her very controllable and exciting to push hard. An exquisite detail are the electronic throttles mounted on the steering pedestals, both sides, neat and out of the way and easily operable.

FLING 16 has been designed, constructed, prepared and maintained to the highest level possible, and offers an incredible deal for the next owner for hopefully late 2020 sailing and a full 20201 campaign at a fraction of the build price. All inventory is very lightly used, and in many cases still new.
