Berthon have sold numerous Callistos over the years but REVEL LADY stands out and is highly recommended. The Callistos were designed by Bill Dixon and built by Croft Marine in the Midlands, who specialised in steel fabrication using techniques evolved by the aircraft industry to produce beautifully rounded hulls which are also immensely strong. REVEL LADY was modified for the owners by Bill Dixon to provide an extra secure-feeling cockpit, much like Amel Yachts, and was fitted out by Collingwood – a Moody trained shipwright operating out of Shamrock Quay in Southampton. The quality of the joinery compares with the very best and the owners, from new, have maintained her lavishly to a very high standard, using recognised professional boatyards in the UK, Malta and France.
REVEL LADY is in fantastic order. She boasts an ultimate all weather dog house which was also wonderfully ergonomically designed by her owner. With her sensible and practical rig setup, she can be sailed in all weathers with few hands.
Many passing comments are amazed that she is a steel hulled yacht due to her wonderful looking topside and smart varnish. She has benefited from multiple hull resprays throughout her life to keep her looking fresh and any rust at bay.
We have owned REVEL LADY from new. She was built with the ambition to sail round the world, but career factors intervened, and her sailing has been more restricted to European waters. She glides through the water gently and calmly inspiring confidence in the crew, in all weathers and sea conditions. Even in a F6/7 with big following seas in Biscay, and ably steered by her Hydrovane self-steering, not a drop of water was encountered in the cockpit. She readily cruises at around 6 knots climbing to 8 knots, and the motion is always calm and without fuss.
The advantage of steel is, of course, its strength. Croft Marine, who fabricated the hull and superstructure, famously showed prospective customers a photo of a Callisto, hit by an enormous cargo vessel, resting upright on the vessel’s prow before sliding off and continuing to sail. The disadvantage is rust. It is therefore relevant to mention that Croft used a paint technique borrowed from the car industry of sandblasting the steel and applying molten aluminium outside and zinc inside so that any future exposed areas of steel self-healed without rusting. Also, with REVEL LADY, we ensured that the engine electrics, a source of cathodic rusting, were totally isolated, including the starter motor, from the steel structure of the boat. For these reasons, and also the fact that we had the hull and superstructure resprayed every 7 years, we believe the boat to be rust-free.
We are selling REVEL LADY, and downsizing to a smaller boat, because we are getting old and less mobile, and for no other reason. She is in sail-away condition whatever your sailing ambitions.
