Broker’s Comments

KILORAN is the first of the Discovery 55 MK IIs with flush hatches, sunken main hatch garage and a number of other updates on the original design, which work brilliantly. She also has the open layout executed in oak and this looks wonderful. KILORAN is in her original ownership and she has been cherished through life. Maintained to a standard rather than a price, she is offered in full cruising trim and is coded to MCA Category 2.

2021 has seen a refit just completed which has KILORAN in truly sparkling shape. Work includes:

  • Topsides repaint.
  • Toerail repair.
  • Refurbished leather upholstery.
  • New safety gear.
  • Full overhaul of the rig.
  • New screens for the Raymarine kit.
  • Refurbishment of rudder.

Owner’s Comments

KILORAN is a robust, well-built and wonderfully safe family yacht. She has all the luxuries of a superyacht twice her size, which has made our time on board a joy. We have had lots of adventures that we would never have experienced without her. The excitement of a new voyage in luxury and comfort to the wildest of places, and the many landfalls in new and interesting parts of the globe have been extraordinary.

We have loved parties and wild nights onboard in anchorages and marinas all around the world and have made many friends along the way. The delight on the faces of our old friends invited to share our beautiful yacht has been priceless.

We have loved the connection to nature that sailing brings and been privileged to see some sights that most people never see. Stand out wild life sightings included 500 to 1000 dolphins swimming alongside us during an Atlantic crossing, mating sperm whales off the Azores, and Killer Whales feeding on blue fin tuna on the Spanish Coast.
I have learned to do so much more than I have ever imagined in maintaining the yacht to the highest standards, and I am proud to say that in almost every port we have met admirers who complemented KILORAN on her beauty.

And then there is the sailing – she has a beautiful sailing action, comfortable and fast.

We decided to build a Discovery 55 because of the build quality and her abilities as a long distance, safe cruising yacht. KILORAN has proved to be solid and reliable as well as being a beautiful yacht that sails very well. She a comprehensive bluewater specification and she is set up to for shorthanded sailing. This enabled me to take on a solo voyage from Newport, Rhode Island in the USA to Bermuda, an incredible experience over 4 days.

We took delivery of KILORAN on the South Coast of England cruised the West Coast of France in our first summer of ownership. We then ventured into the Mediterranean to Spain and the Balearics followed by a season in Sardinia and Corsica. Then came the coasts of Italy and Sicily, then through the Corinth Canal to Athens and the Greek islands. We returned via Corfu, Sicily, Malta and back to Gibraltar. We then sailed to the Canary Islands and enjoyed our first Atlantic crossing via Cape Verde with the ARC + which was such fun, meeting the other yachters on a voyage of a lifetime. The Caribbean is wonderful, warm weather and people, fun times on many islands and the best of sailing.

For the summer season, we sailed to Bermuda and into New York, a family experience to treasure and how many people have done that? My 18 year old daughter drove us up the East River under the Brookland and Manhattan bridges, we explored Newport and Boston and Martha’s Vineyard where we ate freshly cooked lobster in the village that was the set for the Jaws films, somewhat surreal. Eventually back to the Caribbean via the BVIs and islands such as Saba, Nevis and St Kits back to the home of Caribbean sailing, Antigua. From there it was home to Scotland to explore the West Coast and visit the beautiful bay the yacht was named after on the island of Colonsay, the place of many family holidays in our younger days.
