CELTIC SPIRIT was originally christened BEAGLE.

She was conceived for high performance, extended cruising with a young family in remote locations such as Antarctica. It was therefore important that she was very strong and that her systems offered her the highest levels of reliability and long range.

Built to designs by Dubois, she achieved a passage speed of 9 knots during extended builder’s trials from Falmouth to Cowes. This exceeded expectations.

The interior was designed by Mark Whitely; and successfully achieves a ‘Super Yacht’ feel and good volume for the owner’s party of 6 plus 2 crew. A floating interior was used to reduce noise and improve shipboard life.

During her original ownership CELTIC SPIRIT sailed to Antarctica and circumnavigated the globe twice. All this without fuss, and proving that a fast sailing yacht can also be rugged enough to withstand all the world’s oceans without compromising style and comfort.

In 2002 the yacht changed hands in the Caribbean. She was sailed back to her build yard and she underwent an 8-month rebuild to upgrade the yacht hugely. During this rebuild the main systems were replaced and she was restored internally. Her communications and navigational systems were also replaced, as well as her sails. Of course the game has moved on since 1993, and there was the opportunity to up-date and improve on many of the systems that she had when built.

She then cruised the Mediterranean before returning to the UK to be sold. Her current owner purchased her in 2005 with the idea in mind of serious high and low latitude cruising. After commissioning, she cruised to Greenland before returning to Berthon with a work list that was long. During this refit work included new paint to the hull and superstructure and replacement of the teak decks. At that time many technical improvements were also actioned including a review of the hydraulic systems, and the rig including a water catchment membrane internally for the main mast which is keel stepped. Her hydraulic door system was also rebuilt and the anchoring system re-designed and rebuilt for world cruising.

After her refit CELTIC SPIRIT sailed to Portugal and the Azores and then across the Atlantic arriving in Argentina and then cruising the Antarctic and South Georgia. She then made her way back to the Caribbean to Trinidad and thence to Antigua where she put up a spirited showing in Antigua Race Week prior to sailing back to Western Europe.

Since then she has cruised extensively in the Mediterranean sailing as far east as Greece and Albania and she has also crossed the Atlantic 6 times in order to spend winters in the warmth of the Caribbean. Throughout the current ownership she has had the same Captain aboard.

CELTIC SPIRIT has sailed around 100,000 miles with her current ownership safely and with great style. Throughout the period she has been meticulously maintained and she has touched the hearts and minds of her crew and all who have been involved with her. A book and documentary follow and describe her remarkable story.

Since the 2005 refit, CELTIC SPIRIT has enjoyed a series of refits carried out in Europe. Work includes:

  • New topsides and superstructure repaint in Jotun (2014).
  • Rig repaint in Jotun (2011).
  • Fuel transfer system.
  • New Mastervolt Chargemaster battery chargers (2016).
  • New invertor (2011).
  • All seacocks replaced 2015.
  • New Iridium SatPhone with red port optimizer (2016).
  • New Simrad Ap-26 Autopilot (2011).
  • New refrigeration compressors (2017).
  • New Ocean Air blinds in the main saloon (2015).
  • New rod rigging and spectra running rigging (2012).
  • New North 3Di Mainsail (2018).
  • Propellers refurbished (2020).

CELTIC SPIRIT is now available for trouble-free World sailing in totally operational condition. Her classic Dubois good looks are still as contemporary as they were when she was first launched in Falmouth in 1993. Because of the need for complete independence, the yacht is sold with a very complete inventory of spares and replacement parts. All spares are stored in custom built storage areas and are all inventoried for ease of location. The yacht has been managed by a qualified surveyor to ensure that the maintenance schedule is always maintained to a very high operational standard. Although she does not charter, she is maintained in class with the MCA at Category 2.

CELTIC SPIRIT is laid up ashore at the moment as her programme has now concluded for this owner. She continues to be maintained and the yard facility where she is lying provides the opportunity for her new owner to fit out her easily to start her or his sailing programme.

Owner’s Comments

CELTIC SPIRIT is a most beautiful yacht and she is admired wherever we sail. Not only does she have beautiful lines but she looks and is, a most seaworthy craft which has taken her crew joyfully and safely on more than 100,000 miles of ocean sailing during our various adventures. She is maintained to exacting standards irrespective of budget and rewards us with a go anywhere attitude of spirit and bravery.

We have had so many special times on board and it is truly difficult to identify any particular destination above the so many fabulous places we visited but a few come to mind which may deserve more visits. Isafjordur in north west Iceland where the whole village partied all night aboard CELTIC SPIRIT. Great Skellig island in south west Ireland where we climbed to the summit and observed the beehive structures previously inhabited by monks. The island of Fernando de Noronha 200 miles off northwest Brazil where we surfed our dinghy ashore on enormous swells and observed their unique Spinner Dolphins, and of course the isolation of the rugged Beagle Canal in Patagonia and Antarctica but especially the most magnificent South Georgia with its abundance of wildlife.

With family now demanding a slice of this life we are seeking a larger yacht and we are therefore reluctantly allowing a new owner continue with CELTIC SPIRIT and her unique spirit of adventure.
