The fabulous Fairey Fantome sits on a deep-veed GRP hull, after the plug was taken from the graceful Huntsman 31 hull. Thus the Fantome does not require the same attention which her agba mahogany sisters demand, to keep their youthful good looks. “TATIANA” hails from 1973, and is hull no.4 in the series of only around 9 production boats. The design was an instant success, winning Boat of the Show at the ’73 London Boat Show, and has better headroom than the mahogany Huntsman, whilst retaining all of the exceptional rough-weather handling and chuckability of the 31, and competed in racing, as well as being practical in cruising guise.
She has original gelcoat, and has benefited from gentle handling, and a major refit during 2005. The refit consisted of a tidy-up of electrics, pipework, an epoxy coating to her hull and interior refresh, but also the fitting of a pair of new Perkins Sabre M300TI diesels on ZF 8C gearboxes, and associated gear including a new fire suppression system. The engines make a vast difference in the usability and maintenance of her, with parts being available, and smokeless start compared to the previous generation of blocks.
In her present 11 year Ownership, her electronics were upgraded (2018) to a modern Simrad Evo display, with a new radar scanner and AIS – so she is bang up to date in terms of Navionics.
