Broker’s Comments

FPB 64 TOCCATA is an iconic “Functional Power Boat” that we know well. Originally named IRON LADY, she was built in 2011 for an experienced American yachtsman who cruised her for four years from New Zealand to the west coast of North America. When the original owner decided to move up to an FPB 78, we sold her to her second owners in 2015. The new owners sailed her from Seattle (north) into British Columbia, then south through the Panama Canal, back north to Nova Scotia, down to the Caribbean, across the Atlantic and then two years in the Mediterranean and Atlantic – Europe. All told, they travelled ~30,000 miles and visited 30+ countries over the course of four years.

Following a yard period here at Berthon, FPB 64 TOCCATA reluctantly returned to the USA via freighter in 2020 after COVID-19 restrictions constrained her owners’ cruising plans in northern Europe. She is now in Southwest Harbor, Maine – after a successful passage up from Florida on her own bottom and is in heated indoor storage at the Hinckley Yachts yard fully refreshed and ready for viewing. FPB 64 TOCCATA’s original owner equipped her with extensive spares and employed a full-time captain to ensure that she was in top condition and her current owners have maintained the same philosophy of continuous maintenance, updates and improvements. She is fully equipped and ready to sail away on a turnkey basis to realize the dreams of her next owners.

Owner’s Comments

We are long-time boaters with a background in performance sailing and coastal and offshore racing. When the opportunity came for us to take a travel sabbatical from our professional lives, we initially embarked on a carbon sailing catamaran… and very quickly realized we were on the wrong platform to realize our dreams. As sailors, we had followed Steve Dashew’s exploits for years, including his launch of the FPB line of powerboats. Also as sailors, we scoffed when Steve transitioned from sail to power and said “we would never do that.” Boy were we wrong. After our catamaran misadventure, we were very fortunate to buy the first FPB to come on the re-sale market, and to buy her from a very experienced owner who was moving up in the FPB range and who, with his full-time captain, had fully sorted the boat during his four years of ownership. We purchased what became FPB 64 TOCCATA in the summer of 2015 and, after a few weeks learning about and refreshing the boat, we set off on a four-year journey during which we saw a huge part of the world, checked-off bucket list items, became healthy and happy again and set ourselves up for the next phase of our lives – all on a boat with the performance, efficiency, safety and comfort that only an FPB can provide.

We purchased FPB 64 TOCCATA in Seattle and, after an initial shakedown cruise in British Columbia and circumnavigating Vancouver Island, we set off for points south – a leisurely cruise of California, Mexico and Costa Rica before arriving in Panama and transiting the Canal. From there we cruised the San Blas islands before heading north to Key West via Providencia, Roatan, Belize and Isla Mujeres, Mexico – a total of nine months underway on our first cruise!

Summer and fall 2016 found us heading north to Nova Scotia before staging in Annapolis for the run to the Caribbean. We left the Chesapeake Bay in January 2017 with snow on our decks and arrived in sunny and warm Bermuda four days later. San Juan, Puerto Rico, was a further few days away, and from there we spent four months exploring the eastern Caribbean before returning to San Juan to prepare for our Atlantic crossing.

Everyone asks how our crossing was and our answer is always “uneventful… just like we wanted it to be.” There’s something special about setting the throttle, engaging the autopilot and settling in to ten days of good food, rest, reading, conversation and wildlife watching – all while having absolute confidence in your boat and using only half a tank of fuel! Our first stop was the Azores and, after painting our boat name and logo on the dock in Horta, we had a perfect passage to Gibraltar, arriving five days later and ready to start our Mediterranean adventures.

Late summer and fall of 2017 found us exploring Spain, France, Italy and all of the large Med islands before we put FPB 64 TOCCATA up for the winter at the highly regarded BNFG yard in Gaeta, Italy. There she received outstanding care from true artisans and when we returned in early spring 2018, both she and we were ready for the adventures ahead.

2018 was another period when we stretched ourselves and the boat, and it was only because we were in an FPB that we were able to do everything we wanted to in a relatively short period of time. From the west coast of Italy, we rounded the boot and crossed the Adriatic to Montenegro, then explored Croatia northbound on our way to Venice and southbound on our way to Greece. We pressed as far east and south as we could in Greece, with a few days in Crete marking our turning point before heading back west. We island-hopped Sicily-Sardinia-Mallorca before our final stop in Gibraltar to prepare for our next phase out into the Atlantic and up to England via Spain, Portugal and France. We arrived at Berthon in October 2018, satisfied with our accomplishments but knowing we had only scratched the surface and that one day we will return again.

The initial plan was for FPB 64 TOCCATA to spend the winter at Berthon and then we would return in the spring of 2019 to explore Scotland, Ireland and/or the Baltic. We ended up enjoying a summer in the USA, assuming we would just start up again in 2020, but then of course COVID-19 put an end to those plans and we ended up shipping FPB 64 TOCCATA back home via freighter. In the meantime, she benefitted greatly from her time at Berthon, a team that knows and loves FPBs, and she was in beautiful condition when she was offloaded from the ship in Florida in December 2020.

Now she is in Southwest Harbor, Maine, after a wonderful trip up from Florida, and we have made the hard decision to part with her. Our lives have become busy again and FPB 64 TOCCATA deserves much more than just to commute up and down the US east coast. She is made for adventuring and to make people’s dreams come true. She is in the care of the excellent Hinckley Yachts yard and they have done a wonderful job getting her ready for her next owners. Our goal is to hand her over in turn-key, ready-to-cast-off condition so that her next owners can start enjoying her immediately and with as much positive impact on their lives as we have enjoyed over the past six years and 30,000 miles of our time with her. And we of course will be happy to support her new owners in any way we can, including outfitting and training. We look forward to your inquiry and to telling you all about what a wonderful boat FPB 64 TOCCATA is and how she will change your lives for the better.
