Broker’s Comments

The general perception of catamarans as cruising yachts has long been shattered by Gunboat. First appearing in 2001 with TRIBE, the first Gunboat 62 and the range has been updated and extended ever since.

GAIA is Gunboat 66–07. Designed by Morelli and Melvin, she was built by Gunboat in South Africa, and then finished in West Coast USA by Westerly Composites and launched in 2015, with an extensive refit in 2021.

She is one of the most advanced Gunboats of the era, with curved dagger boards and T foil rudders.

She was originally EXTREME H2O and lightly used as a high performance cruising yacht and also entered some distance races with a highly skilled professional crew, winning many races including the prestigious Transpac in 2015.

She achieved line honours in almost every race she entered, in perfect comfort and with the luxuries of life on-board. She has a racing configuration with the sail plan and also the addition of tiller steering outside with mainsheet control at the helm (for safety), rotating carbon mast with EC6 (carbon) standing rigging and easy traveller controls.

Uniquely, she has a very clever hybrid drive and power generation system that will allow her a long range with an electric drive with retractable propellers to reduce drag and also wear, and a large capacity battery bank.

This means she can run silently without the use of the generator for winches, air-conditioning etc. for significantly more time than a conventional power setup.

With the foils and a very generous sail plan, she can sail upwind very efficiently with the masthead code 0 and off wind, she lights up with her generous sail wardrobe and can reach speeds of 30 knots if pushed hard. Of course you don’t need to.

The generous internal accommodation is in the popular ‘galley up’ configuration, which gives a more sociable living space and more accommodation in the hulls, closer to the water line, so cooler and with plenty of light from the hull windows.

Externally the new daybed in the aft cockpit is the perfect place to relax at any time of the day and the aft cockpit is ready for the next owner with all new cushions.

In her current ownership, the yacht has been setup with an extra crew cabin in the port forward compartment, with heads. She is very capable and fitted out for charter and offers a unique proposition.

Along with the charter configuration, other upgrades and replacements have been made to bring her up to modern standards including watermaker, new navigation electronics, refrigeration, and new mainsail, all of these upgrades take away equipment running costs for the next owner to just simply enjoy this fast, exciting and incredible catamaran with a huge amount of deck space.
