Iguana Yachts was born in the mind of Antoine Brugidou in 2008, hugely successful in the cooperate world, Antoine lived on the beautiful Normandy coast line and wanted an elegant, amphibious sports boat, that could handle the challenging tides, terrains and sea conditions allowing him instant access all year round. Naturally, this brought Antoine to the idea that tracks would be much more suitable then wheels. Iguana teamed up with naval architect Tanguy Le Bihan and the designers Fritsch & Durisotti, to produce Iguana’s mobility system that is now worldwide patented, and incorporates a set of tracks into the hull, without compromising its excellent hydrodynamic properties. Fast forward to 2020, Iguana have five models and sold over 50 boats, across four continents. “Iguana Pro” the commercial arm of the company, is also now starting to make a real impact in the sector.
The hull of the Iguana is just as clever and is identical across all the models. The sharp deep V pierces through waves, while the spray rail that run the full length of the hull, create lift and guides the Iguana quickly onto the plane. With the legs safely stowed the hull benefits from the 350 kilos of ballast sitting above the waterline on each side, creating remarkable stability for a 30ft sports cruiser. Interestingly the air flows between the legs of the mobility system, behaving similarly to a stepped hull. All of this translates into a top speed of 50 knots, while keeping the crew safe and dry!
Iguana have not reinvented the wheel with their mobility system, which is very similar to what you would find on a digger and therefore very reliable. To make the landing gear seaworthy the team had to choose the materials carefully, that is why the undercarriage is made of marine grade aluminium, nylon and the tracks themselves are rubber lined with Kevlar. Iguana have a unique tensioning system that keep the tracks under a specified load at all times and slackened when not in use to reduce wear. The tracks are powered by hydraulics from a conventional combustion engine or as an option, direct electric, which offer whisper quiet movement and of course zero emissions. The clue is in the name of the mobility system, as the tracks move independently and are extremely agile. Inclines of up to 40 degrees can be tackled over a whole variety of different terrains.
The Iguana Commuter is the flagship of the range and really displays the incredible talent they have within the company. The Commuter boasts an array of features including; a cabin with double berth, integrated head, adjustable hardtop that turns from sunshade to completely weather sealed with a touch a button, adjustable helm chair that memorises your preferred height and an electric automatic ladder for disembarking. This is all controlled from Iguana own management software system that was created in house and has the ability to run complete diagnostics remotely on all systems.
