The Marten 49 is a thinking man’s cruiser/racer.
Full carbon construction, a light displacement and well thought out systems makes this class of yacht a delight to sail – easy and simple to cruise. SUMMER STORM was bought and then put through an intensive refit to make her by far the best example possible. Not only that, but the refits were undertaken by the craftsmen at Hinckley Yachts and also NEB, who are synonymous with high quality race yachts. All systems were reviewed and replaced where necessary. Rigging was replaced – both running and standing and the hull was painted in a beautiful white to keep her fresh in the winter sun.
A USP of the Marten 49 is her lifting keel, to reduce draft from a sporty 3.68m to a cruising friendly 2.50m. A common concern with a brokerage lift keel is around maintenance, but that is not an issue with SUMMER STORM. The keel has been removed 3 times in the last 3 years for preventative maintenance and bearings replaced, the hydraulic lift has been rebuilt to give many years of confidence and the fin has been stripped, re-faired and repainted.
The current owner is an avid racing fan, and hence the sail wardrobe is the best, and constantly upgraded. Not only for inshore, but also for offshore and has a huge amount of combinations possible.
Her racing record is second to none, her 2019 IRC TCC is 1.241, yet keeping up with yachts much higher rated, especially upwind.
She has a cruising life also, and all creature comforts are available with a complete set of cruising sails, transom entry to the lazarette which will swallow a small dinghy with ease. The asymmetric setup is a joy for cruising to carry on sailing when many have resorted to engine. A small investment in a top down furling system for the asymmetric spinnaker would give a very simple setup for shorthanded, even single-handed cruising. Her battery operated powered winches make sailing at night a pleasure without the noise and vibrations of a PTO from the main engine. Cruising and racing lives really do complement each other well!
Her whole electronics system has been given the once over, and has the popular and robust H5000 from B&G with Garmin repeaters on the mast. FFD all around for the race crews, and plenty of chart plotting capabilities for the cruising life.
The upgrades have been top to bottom, including 2 substantial refits at NEB and Hinckley.
Race results include 3rd in CSA2 in 2020 in RORC 600, a Class win in 2019 Vineyard Race, a Class Win 2019 Les Voiles de St. Barths, Class 2nd in RORC 600 2019, Class Win in 2018 Block Island Race, podium in Marblehead to Halifax and line honors in the 2017 Edlu.
