Broker’s Comments

Starting out with a blank sheet of paper, everything is possible. So began the journey to build and campaign the most technologically advanced canting keel offshore racing yacht.

The first major decision may have been a relatively simple one, to choose a designer. Based on the runaway success in the Volvo 70 class in particular, a natural choice fell to Juan K design, who’s track record with canting keel design is second to none. The DNA of this design house can clearly be seen in the wide beam running aft, sharply chined topsides forward, but softening and rising towards the aft sections, combined with the bluff and voluminous bow sections that keep the yacht in balance at varying degrees of heel.

Perhaps one of the most discussed innovations on this yacht, centre on the twin rudders, designed and inspired with a nod towards nature and the pectoral fins of the humpback whale in particular. Tubercles they are called, and hang on to laminar flow, even at extreme angles and pressure. Just what you need on a windy reach.

Keel structure performance and safety has a high priority on this yacht. Sensors on the keel pin, and load sensing patches on the keel fin continuously log data of loads travelling through the structure, which are fed to the navigation station in real time, and also logged for future analysis.

The entire keel fin and bulb were replaced in 2018 to increase draft to 7m, the bulb was replaced with a lighter version, just over 1,000 Kg less than the previous, to lower displacement without reducing righting moment for lighter conditions. 1,400 Kg of Water ballast per side in aft tanks keeps the power on and the yacht planted in the roughest of conditions.

The towering 40m Southern Spars Carbon mast was replaced in 2019 with a higher modulus, lower windage and lighter section to improve performance and increase righting moment. Held up with Carbolink solid carbon standing rigging, replacing the EC6 from the previous rig.

The yacht was constructed in 2014 by the hugely experienced team at New England Boatworks, in the heart of the USA yacht racing capital, Newport, RI. She launched in December 2014 and after very successful sea trails headed south to the Caribbean for a very successful debut season, class wins in her first two regattas and a close 3rd in the grueling Caribbean 600.

Since then, she has proven to be one of the fastest yachts on the planet, and uniquely amongst the record breakers, proven to be very competitive under handicap in many different wind conditions.

She is now available on the brokerage market for the next owner to enjoy. She will continue to be campaigned at the highest level, to ensure that she is handed over a true turn-key yacht with every part tip top.
