CAPE FLING II, ex HIGHLAND FLING XII (although under the same ownership) was conceived in 2011 by Reichel-Pugh and the owner to be a state of the art, fast IRC yacht, capable of beating the TP52 fleet in inshore racing that were handcuffed by being under class rules as well.
She has a very unique setup for both inshore and coastal sailing. A majority of the controls are driven hydraulically, taking away the requirement for a body of grinders, and significantly more effective for a minimal handicap penalty, keeping more weight on the rail for long legs and engines don’t get tired!
IN her first year, results came well, debuting in Key West race week with mixed results to be expected just after launch. Another bump in the road with a dismasting in St Thomas regatta focused minds and engineering on reliability and since then she has been proven to be incredibly competitive and reliable.
She changed her name to CAPE FLING as she based herself in Cape Town to sail locally in the prevalent strong winds, a true test of a yacht and systems. She has passed this test with flying colours and continues to give excellent performance and results, she is very well maintained and optimized and updated regularly to keep her at the top of the game.
She really does lend herself to coastal racing, with wheel steering, twin rudders and hydraulic power. Some modest investment would be required to go fully offshore, but would be pretty simple and would offer a very potential package against the converted TP52.
Twin rudders and wheel steering make her very easy to control.
