Broker’s Comments

Southerly Yachts enjoy a great reputation for building beautifully crafted yachts that return great cruising performance, solid build and a high degree of creature comfort below decks. The icing on the cake has got be their efficient variable draft. The swing keel system is something Southerly have been producing for decades so they have it pretty well mastered. Allowing owners to access the shallowest of anchorages while delivering superb offshore performance with a draft of over 10ft.

Southerly 47 MILLSTREAM is a particularly good example, having enjoyed good ownership and a significant list of recent updates to add to her ease of handling and overall enjoyment. Most notably was the change from conventional main sail to in-mast furling with the addition of a new Selden rig. Fully equipped, MILLSTREAM lacks for nothing – bow and stern thrusters, recent sails, generator, water maker, air-conditioning. There is little to add apart from perhaps an ARC entry!

Owner’s Comments

Southerly 47 MILLSTREAM is a solid, safe, dependable and very comfortable family yacht, although for much of the time we sailed her with just two of us on-board. We have had many great adventures that we would otherwise not have experienced.

We chose a Southerly 47 because of the build quality and her abilities as a cruising yacht that would keep us safe and comfortable in any challenging conditions. The swing keel is a key selling feature of Southerly yachts, but we primarily chose her because of her general layout and in particular the raised saloon which provides a great view when ‘down below’.

The ability to vary our draft has been more useful than we originally thought and has allowed us into marinas and anchorages that would normally be off limits to a yacht of her size, or early entry if there was a bar or sill.

We took delivery of Southerly 47 MILLSTREAM in St. Helier, Jersey. We then cruised along the north coast of France and Belgium and entered the canals of Holland, sailing the mast-up route to Amsterdam and into the Ijsselmeer. We followed the adventures of Ernest Childers in the shifting shallows of the Frisian Islands and then into the Baltic via the Kiel Canal.

We enjoyed the smoked fish of east coast Denmark and then crossed over to Kristiansand in Norway where we anchored off our summerhouse for a family gathering, before crossing the North Sea to Scotland. A highlight for us was sailing through Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal and then south through Britain’s most beautiful shortcut, the Crinan Canal.

After overwintering in the Clyde, we enjoyed visiting distilleries in the Hebrides, before heading south down the east coast of Ireland to Kinsale. Across to Brest via the Scillies in the company of dolphins and then rather than sailing directly across Biscay, we followed the coast of France and Spain to A Coruña where we overwintered for our second year.

We explored the Rias of Galicia and the Portuguese coast, before crossing from Cadiz to Tangier and along the Moroccan coast to Ceuta. We crossed back to Spain and continued east to Denia before a lovely summer in the Balearic Islands. Cabrera Island, south of Mallorca, being a particular favourite. We then headed to the lovely beaches and stunning scenery in the north of Sardinia.

In 2021, we sailed up the west coast of Corsica, onwards to Nice, Antibes and Cannes (surprisingly affordable) before heading east along the coast of Italy, via Monaco, to Elba and then back to the west coast of Corsica at Bastia before travelling south to Santa Teresa on Sardinia.
