Broker’s Comments

Certainly, one’s thoughts turn to performance, speed and design when an X-Yacht/X4.9 is mentioned. They are one of those boats that turn heads when they arrive in to any harbor, and on the race course, are one of the boats the others want to beat! This model is a true cruiser/racer, built by one of the few builders who are still successfully building a boat for an owner who wants to do both. X4.9, ABIDE is easily handled by one or two, and these owners have also lived aboard long term, taking advantage of the COVID-19 situation and working from the boat while sitting in the Caribbean. Nice three-stateroom layout, very light interior and good storage.

The X-Yachts X4.9 was awarded winner of the best full size cruiser 45-55ft Boat of the Year by Cruising World 2020.

Owner’s Comments

ABIDE, our X4.9 has delivered much pleasure to us whether on the racecourse or cruising in the USVI and New England waters. She can be easily handled by a crew of two and can tick off miles at a brisk pace while providing comfort in style at anchor.

Before owning this X4.9 we owned a Hanse 415, which was a terrific boat, but we wanted more performance, more space and a second head for cruising with family and friends on board. We began researching boats in that size range, created a spreadsheet to compare features and performance, and decided to attend the boat show in Düsseldorf to see firsthand many of the boats we were considering. The Düsseldorf trip did not disappoint – we came away very impressed with the X4.9. We were able to sail her in Mystic, CT that summer at Rogers Yacht Sales. The sea trial brought smiles to our faces – it was clear this boat was made for speed and we knew this was the boat for us. We took ownership after the Newport Boat Show, sailing to Cuttyhunk to meet up with friends celebrating that evening at sunset with champagne and fresh oysters on the half shell around our cockpit table. Later when temperatures cooled we moved into the saloon, turned on the diesel heater and cooked dinner with our friends.

Our first summer with our new boat we entered the Marblehead to Halifax Race. With a crew of eight friends and family on board, the pipe berths were in full rotation as we sailed 24/7 up to Halifax with 3-person watches on a 3-hour rotation. It was a wonderful experience including being up for first light at 3:30 AM, sail changes in the middle of the night, many amazing meals, long conversations and camaraderie. After crossing the finish line and a celebratory dinner, all of our crew flew home and Tom and I embarked on a month-long cruise back to Cape Cod that included stops at over 24 ports along the way. We explored the coast of Nova Scotia and then did a night passage across to Bar Harbor where our daughter, son, and son’s girlfriend joined us for a week as we sailed down the coast of Maine. When we reached Portland they flew home, and friends from Portland joined us as we continued sailing south.

As members of the Hyannis Yacht Club, we regularly raced the Wednesday night beer can races, the long distance races to Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and the annual Figawi race.

In the summer months in New England, we regularly cruise Mystic, CT, Newport, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket Padanaram, and up the coast of Maine.

During COVID-19 we decided to ship our boat to the USVI to live and work-from-home aboard. In preparation for the trip, we installed a watermaker, solar panels, a faucet and 120 outlet in the dinghy garage. In November of 2020, we sailed our boat to Newport to be hoisted out of the water and onto the deck of a 650-foot ship where it was secured for the trip south. Two weeks later we flew to St. Thomas in time to receive ABIDE from the ship. We spent much of our time there exploring St. John using the National Park moorings and hiking the many trails on the island. Other days we anchored in small bays. We discovered where the strongest internet signals were for those days when we had important Zoom meetings. We sailed to St. Croix multiple times exploring the island by bike, on foot, and one day in a rental car to circumnavigate the island. During our time in the USVI we had family and friends visit and sail with us multiple times. Living and WFH in the Caribbean that winter was wonderful and gave us a taste for how we might want to spend time in retirement.

We have enjoyed every moment owning our X4.9, however our family is growing with grandchildren now and we want to do more cruising. We are selling our X4.9 because we have decided to purchase a performance CAT.
