Berthon Spain’s Guardiennage Manager, Addy Daly, has spent most of her life on board a boat of some kind. She grew up in Greece – aboard her parents’ yacht, found her first home aboard a 31 footer in Greece and her second aboard a narrow boat in Staffordshire!
She writes: “I’ve been around boats all my life, starting (as so many did) with a Mirror dinghy on a freezing lake! It was my Dad’s passion for sailing that soon got us out to the Ionian on bare boat charter holidays. The sun and warm waters encouraged my (previously reluctant) mum to fall in love with boats as well. This was a life changer for us as a family and it wasn’t long before we moved to Greece, living on board on my parents’ Westerly Discus.
My working life started with flotilla yachts in the Ionian. Yacht maintenance and guardiennage was a smooth transition from this. After some years in Turkey, on my own modest 31 footer and then back for another stint in the Ionian, I returned to the UK. I trained as a chef while living on my own narrow boat. This break from yachting lead me to the tenancy of a traditional pub in Staffordshire, where the successful restaurant and delicious real ales made for hard but very satisfying work for several years.
After I sold the pub the need to return to yachting and the Mediterranean was strong. My first proper ‘superyacht’ job brought me and my now husband to Mallorca, which we have called home for 12 years.
Although my sea time these days is mostly very local, with the yachts we look after in guardiennage, I still enjoy all aspects of working on yachts. It makes me very proud to be able to present the yachts we care for to their owners, in peak condition and ready for whatever and wherever their adventures take them. The relationships that we build with our clients are very important, and this aspect of my job I enjoy very much.
Four years ago my husband and I bought a little finca in the heart of the island. Time spent in the garden with my dog by my side gives me enormous pleasure. Between this and my very slowly improving golf game, any spare time I have is quickly filled! I’ve been shore based here for 7 years or so. For me, learning Spanish to a level of reasonable fluency was a must, and has made a big difference to my enjoyment of life in Spain.
My first shore based job here was working for a cover making company, before returning to the frontline of yachting, in the role of Guardiennage Manager. We have a fantastic and fast growing team at Berthon Spain. I am delighted to be a part of this dynamic company, with all of the opportunities that it brings.”
