Supermarine have been a fascinating company to have become involved with (we were asked to broker this very vessel – then known as 32.001 – for Supermarine Motor Yachts, which had been lightly used as a Demonstrator from their nostalgic base at the Northshore Yard at Itchenor in Chichester Harbour). From initial viewings and then sea-trials, it was immediately evident that all the press raving about this being a superlative sea-boat (with a long heritage drawing on the history and pedigree of Fairey Marine and its wonderful range of craft) was wholly justified.
The new 32 (launched in 2020) was, literally, in the Fairey mould (of the Spearfish 30), but was heavily breathed upon, with a completely new deck moulding, substantially modernised interior, and a completely different powertrain. The original Spearfish ran sweetly on a pair of 175HP Perkins diesels on shaft drives, producing some 30 knots. The Spearfish 32 would need some shoving to shift her Li-Ion battery suite, beautifully upholstered forward cabin, bean-to-cup Miele coffee machine and the attendant mass of mass – and so Supermarine opted for the light, punchy Mercury TDi 370HP V8 blocks, twinned to Duoprop outdrives.
So, what else is new? Well, the Spearfish now has a broad bathing platform giving easy access onto the aft deck, where two sun pads flank the central walk-through, leading forward into the cockpit proper. This aft deck is actually her engine bay hatch, which raises on a powered ram at the touch of a concealed LED-lit button switch, and what an engine bay it is. Squeezing 740 hungry horses into a Shetland pony pen is no mean feat – and yes – it is tight, but the engineering and finish on display is simply first-rate.
Her aft cockpit is deep, secure and beautifully trimmed in modern materials, with a sculpted grey alloy frame allowing a full canopy system, and seating atop for aerials and lights. A neat sink and fold-out table lie to left and rig, with a substantial locker underneath the aft floor, and access to tank, etc. through the forward floor hatch. At the main helm, three Shoxs 6300 race seats are bolted in place, shielded by a wrap-round screen protecting a straightforward carbon-effect dash sporting twin screens, joystick, and all the attendant facets of a modern performance cruiser.
Below decks, the interior is stunning in a palette of Light Greys, Ice Blues and Light Mint Foglizio Italian leather upholstery.
The galley is neatly set to port, with a heads/shower room to starboard. The folding central table drops to form a comfortable berth, and all lighting and entertainment can be controlled on touch-screens – it is a very calm and relaxing place to spend your time.
Safety around her decks has been sympathetically improved by her current (and first) Owner. With highly-polished pulpit rails now encircling her forward decks, and useful side bars added on to her bimini frame make deck access far easier.
She is in completely A1 condition, as anyone stepping on board will immediately appreciate, and we are delighted to be able to broker her for her owner, who (having owned an original wooden-topped Spearfish, a wonderful aft cabin Swordfish 36, and now this wonderful Supermarine Spearfish 32), notes that he has had to end his long boating career with the ultimate, and so it is time to pass her on!
