When Peter Watson decided to build FPB 78#02 GREY WOLF II an explorer designed by Steve and Linda Dashew, he had a clear goal in mind. The yacht needed to be capable of travelling anywhere on the planet safely and reliably.
One way to demonstrate that capability was through MCA Category 0 certification, the highest operational coding available under the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency and arguably the toughest commercial code on the planet.
Mecal a UK MCA coding authority signed off the plans for the bulk of FPBs built but GREY WOLF is the only FPB coded to MCA Category 0 which allows her to charter commercial anywhere in the world without restriction to distance from a safe haven.
But for Peter, the motivation was never commercial.
“Charter was not the primary objective,” he explains in our latest podcast. “I wanted ultimately an extremely safe boat that was designed to go anywhere at any time.”
MCA coding has existed for decades and is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive safety frameworks in the maritime industry. Category 0 sits at the very top of that structure.
Code 0 designates the highest level for commercial vessel certification, it allows unrestricted service worldwide for commercial vessels under 24m. It requires the most stringent standards to operate in any area, including remote, high-latitude, or crossing oceans.
Obtaining and retaining MCA Category 0 coding requires rigorous compliance across a wide range of areas, including stability, structural integrity, fire safety systems, equipment redundancy and operational management procedures for GREY WOLF and her crew.
It also involves a great deal of documentation.
“Huge amounts of form filling,” Peter jokes in the podcast. “But fundamentally the standards ensure that boats operating at Category 0 are capable of operating safely anywhere.”
The MCA are introducing updated regulations in 2027, so all boats operating with their code face significant upgrades in order to remain compliant.
GREY WOLF II recently returned to Berthon in Lymington to complete the final stages of work needed to meet the updated regulatons.

As an MCA Category 0 compliant boat, GREY WOLF II has serious offshore capability but nonetheless a number of upgrades were required to meet the new 2027 standard.
Among the most visible changes were the replacement of the yacht’s composite seacocks with custom stainless steel valves, fabricated specifically for her.
Other modifications included new electrical redundancy to ensure navigation lights remain operational for up to three hours in the event of total power loss, as well as additional shut-off systems for various onboard kit.
Aside from the engineering work, the project also required extensive documentation updates, including operational protocols and new cyber security procedures.
To complement this podcast, we have released two new videos exploring GREY WOLF II in more detail.
The first is a conversation between Peter Watson, Sue and Jonny Turner, Project Manager at Berthon, discussing the refit itself, the MCA coding process and what it takes to maintain a yacht to this standard.
The second video offers a walkthrough of the boat with Sue and Jonny including a close look at the engine room and the systems that allow GREY WOLF II to operate safely in some of the most remote parts of the world.
GREY WOLF II has already proven her capability in extraordinary ways. The yacht has cruised widely across the Pacific and visited remote regions including Antarctica, operating safely in both tropical and polar environments.
Despite this capability, Peter still describes her as a family yacht.
“Although she can go anywhere,” he says, “she’s still a boat you can step aboard with the family and head off on an adventure.”
The next adventure will be a little warmer than Antarctica: a Mediterranean cruise through the Greek islands with family and grandchildren aboard.
For a boat built to explore the extremes of the planet, it’s a reminder that the greatest voyages often begin with family on deck and a horizon ahead.
GREY WOLF II is currently for sale with Berthon and you can find her full particulars here: https://www.berthoninternational.com/yacht-sales-brokerage/yachts-for-sale/fpb-78-grey-wolf-ii/
