After growing up on a farm in South Devon, England, Berthon USA Managing Broker Alan Baines spent a summer working as a sailing instructor in Salcombe, and then joined P&O as a deck cadet. He sailed on a variety of ships including globetrotting refrigerated cargo ships, container ships and what was at the time, the UK’s largest dry cargo ship – a 280,000 tonne oil/ore carrier.
After getting his Second Mates certificate, he worked for a Dutch shipping company as Second Officer.
Following that, he lived worked and travelled in Australia, and then returned to college in Southampton, UK to do a degree in Yacht and Boatyard Management. An internship later took him to the US, and he ran a marina and boatyard on Cape Cod.
After buying and restoring a hurricane damaged Nautor Swan 431 – his admiration for Swans led him to work for the Nautor Swan agency run by future business partner Jennifer Stewart in Newport, Rhode Island – USA.
He writes: “On one of my many trips abroad selling yachts, I had a tour around the Swedish boatbuilder Najad Yachts. This led to the formation, in 2002, of Scandinavian Yachts Inc., to run in parallel with the Nautor Swan agency and represent Najad. This in turn led to the formation of an investor group led by me – which purchased 40% of Najadvarvet, the Swedish Yacht builder in 2005. At the time Najad was growing rapidly and this investment was successfully sold in 2008. In 2010, Scandinavian Yachts Inc. was merged with the Berthon Group, and renamed Berthon USA. I was then instrumental in bringing other brands into our portfolio of new yachts, including Rustler Yachts of Falmouth, England, Moody Yachts and Sealine Yachts, which are both brands of Hanse Group of Germany.”
Alan has extensive knowledge of the exciting Moody deck saloon yachts, and Berthon USA has been Moody dealer of the year for 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021. After owning a string of sailboats, Alan currently has a Back Cove 29 powerboat, which he bought in the south of France, and shipped back to Newport, RI. He is happy to assist in the purchase of new yachts and fine power or sail brokerage yachts, worldwide.
