New Motor Yacht Sales Manager Robert Steadman has been fascinated by the sea and the sense of adventure offered by the ocean from a very young age. It has been an important part of his life ever since and he wouldn’t have it any other way!
He writes: “A strong swimmer, from an early age I always enjoyed water sports growing up and in my early teens it was wakeboarding that got me hooked into boating and the sea – a disorder that has progressively spiralled as times moved on.
It is a privilege to now find myself working in an industry that shares my passion and I have acquired diverse experience in this sector.
My first job found me working for a sports boat importer in Bournemouth, UK, before completing the STCW basic safety training course. I then moved on to the South of France in search of an elusive deckhand position on board a superyacht. Walking the docks for six lonely weeks and having nearly ran out of euros, I landed my first deckhand role. She was a 50m (164ft) Hakvoort. Before you ask it was EXACTLY like ‘Below Deck’!
Five years and four different yachts later, I’d had the most amazing time, gaining invaluable experience in all sorts on the way. I had travelled to over 20 countries and lived, dreamt and breathed yachting, learning all manner of skills – from splicing to helming and everything in between.
I went on to achieve my Yacht Master Offshore in 2012 in Fort Lauderdale. Florida will always be a fond memory, along with the advanced diving qualifications I managed to acquire.
With previous sales experience, yacht brokerage was the natural next step for me and being offered to join the long standing and knowledgeable team at Berthon International in Spring 2018, was one of the easier decisions I have had to make.
Now more than a few years in – I am heading the New Motor Yacht Sales division at Berthon UK, having previously studied under the astute Hugh Rayner. Being a yacht broker is a varied role that I enjoy hugely. The range of wonderful people that I have met along the way has made it all the more interesting. There are forever more challenges and adventures round the corner. I enjoy every minute of it and look forward to whatever the future and the ocean has in store.”
