An elegant classic from 1977, Cherubini 44 Cutter METEOR has just seen a significant £30,000 price tumble.
Despite her vintage, she remains a thoroughly capable and stylish bluewater cruising yacht. Visually striking and structurally sound, METEOR has benefited from a comprehensive programme of updates in recent years. Her current owners have spared no effort or expense, taking a no-compromise approach to both systems and cosmetic enhancements.
METEOR’s devoted owners reflect fondly on what drew them to her and the unforgettable moments they’ve shared aboard:
“We had some specific criteria when we were looking for a sailboat 12 years ago. It had to be safe, bluewater capable, possess a full keel for comfort at sea, be manageable for the two of us, cosy down below, and equally important, she had to be a head-turning beauty. The kind of beauty that when you pull away from her at the mooring, you can’t help but look back to admire her elegant, sleek lines. Like, every time.
METEOR checked all those boxes for us and she has carried us some 7000 nautical miles safely and with a surprising turn of speed. One admirer in Ireland described her as’ slippy slim’… which indeed she is.
The easy motion of her full keel impresses anyone who sails on her, especially those who are accustomed to the less easy motion of a fin keel. And her warm, cherry interior has been our home for months at a time, with many an enjoyable gathering of new and old friends around our dinette table.
With such a capable and comfortable yacht, we have had some of the best sailing we have ever experienced as we cruised the waters of the Bahamas, the eastern seaboard of North America, our island studded home waters of Mahone Bay in Nova Scotia, across the Atlantic to the Azores, and then the coasts of Ireland, Scotland, and England.”
With sweeping overhangs and a bowsprit that stretches her to 50 feet overall, METEOR is every inch the classic ocean voyager.
Her tall cutter rig and generous sail area offer excellent upwind performance, especially in lighter airs where she truly excels. In stronger conditions, sail handling remains simple with three reef points on the mainsail and robust roller-furling headsails. Under sail, she regularly achieves 8 knots, aided by a Brunton feathering propeller for added efficiency.
On deck, METEOR exudes classic bluewater charm, with a layout optimised for offshore capability and comfort at anchor. Her traditional lines are complemented by numerous thoughtful upgrades, making her a joy to sail either short-handed or with crew.
Below decks, warmth and craftsmanship define the space. Rich cherry wood panelling, a midships butterfly hatch, and plentiful ports create a bright, welcoming interior.
Inspired by traditional working vessels, the layout is both practical and sociable, with cleverly integrated pilot berths and communal living areas.
The accommodation is split between two deckhouses. Aft, you’ll find the owner’s pilot berth, navigation station, galley, and settees with additional pilot berths port and starboard. Forward, more berths and storage offer privacy and functionality for extended cruising.
For her owners, making the decision to list METEOR was difficult, but they wished to sell her whilst she was in the best possible condition for a vessel of her vintage, and with the thinking that a new owner would benefit from the love and care that has been invested in her.
