A super-cruising yacht by Southerly. In the Southerly 420, they have combined a high-performing and capable cruising yacht with spectacular accommodation, all within 42’2″ / 12.86m.
Her variable draft is a feature unique to Southerly Yachts, for which they have long been renowned. The yacht’s fully retractable swing keel and grounding plate enable her to dry out. Once there, stepping ashore is a breeze via her moulded transom steps and swim platform. She has a flexible, easily managed rig with twin headstays, a reaching genoa, and a self-tacking Solent jib, as well as a conventional mainsail.
One of the outstanding features of the Southerly 420 is the interior. From her opulent saloon and well-equipped, roomy galley to the owner’s aft cabin, many of her unique selling points would not look out of place on a much larger yacht.
With her excellent cruising inventory, BLUE DOLPHIN, commissioned in 2013, was well spec’d from the outset and benefits from an extensive refit in 2025, making her fully ready to hit the high seas.
Name to be retained by vendor.
We have loved owning and using this beautiful boat. It is only due to circumstances beyond our control that we are forced to sell her. She is universally admired by all who see her, attracting attention wherever she goes!
Particular features that we have appreciated:
1) Comfort. The deck saloon layout ensures she is always light, with panoramic views no matter where you find yourself. She is remarkably spacious, feeling more like an apartment than a boat! The luxurious aft cabin is particularly wonderful: large, bright and airy, with access and headroom all around. You can even gaze out of the stern window from the comfort of your bed. The fore and aft en-suites and showers provide complete privacy. Lighting is excellent throughout, and ventilation is enhanced by fans.
The galley is ideally situated for use while on passage and is equipped with everything one could need, even in a home kitchen. BLUE DOLPHIN also offers the luxury of two smart TVs, perfect for catching up on news or entertainment on rainy days. We have often had children on board, and the swim platform with hot shower proves a real boon.
2) Engineering. The engine room is fully sealed, with almost complete dampening of engine noise. Access to the engine is excellent. The lift keel is easy to operate and, of course, allows access to places other yachts cannot reach – as well as the ability to take the ground. The on-board generator provides complete independence from shore power.
3) Sailing. Despite her size, she is supremely easy to sail, with everything controllable from the cockpit. The mainsail hoists effortlessly with the powered winch and drops smoothly when released. The self-tacker can be used as a staysail or simply for easy sailing, while the genoa is powerful and fast. We have used the full suite of downwind sails at various times. All instruments and controls are located at the helm, with the option of a virtual helm at the chart table. All in all, she is a fast, stable, and effortless cruiser that I would happily take anywhere.
