Broker’s Comments

This 1993 Amel Super Maramu, NUNKY represents the gold standard in bluewater cruising yachts, a vessel designed by sailors, for sailors who take ocean passages seriously. Still building fantastically capable yachts now.

Amel’s legendary integrated systems approach means everything works together seamlessly: the in-mast furling and protected centre cockpit allow a couple to sail this 53-footer safely and comfortably in all conditions. The ketch rig breaks sail area into manageable portions, and the signature Amel features throughout make life on board a breeze. She remains as practical today as when she left the La Rochelle yard.

At 30+ years young, a Super Maramu of this vintage has proven her build quality. The hand-laid fiberglass hull and meticulous French joinery have stood the test of time and miles. These yachts were built for circumnavigations, and many have completed several. NUNKY gives the opportunity of a relatively lightly used version with an Atlantic circuit beneath her keel in this ownership.

Amel yachts have a huge following around the World and are well known for being the ultimate bluewater cruiser. This has been accelerated by the popularity of SV Delos on YouTube and showing what it is really like living on board.

Owner’s Comments

NUNKY’s main engine, generator, electric furlers, standing rigging, sails, 24-volt house batteries, critical plumbing and many other devices and systems are less than 5-years old, making this Super Maramu in better condition than any other her age. – Bill Rouse (Amel Yacht School)

In 3 words: Comfortable, reliable and safe.

We bought NUNKY in the South of France in September 2019. We are the second owners. The previous owner was fastidious about maintenance, and he was a fantastic engineer. His work on the yacht was first class. He also lovingly cared for the yacht. He was so careful that he and his wife only wore white linen down below. The yacht was immaculate when we bought her and we have looked after her just as well.

In 2019 we started a major refit. That continued after the pandemic in 2020 and has been ongoing ever since. Nearly every system on the yacht has been replaced, including the engine, generator, electrical system, and navigation system. No expense has been spared.

We sailed NUNKY across Biscay twice and right through the Mediterranean. In November 2023 we started our Atlantic circuit. We sailed from Montenegro to Gran Canaria and then to the Caribbean. After a season there, we returned to Europe via Bermuda and the Azores. That was NUNKY’s second Atlantic circuit.

When sailing from east to west we had downwind conditions most of the time. The ballooner sail was perfect as it can be flown for days on end without stress. If there was a squall coming, the ballooner could be furled just as a genoa can be. It is a very clever system.

Inevitably, when crossing the Atlantic, we encountered some heavy weather. What impressed us most was the way the yacht handled everything with ease. The centre cockpit is so big that we always felt safe. We chose to heave to at one point. The yacht handled this superbly and for 4 hours we had the most amazing sleep.

Also inevitably, when crossing an ocean, we had long periods of calm. With the large fuel tank, NUNKY was able to motor for days if needed. The engine did not miss a beat.

NUNKY has been set up for safety and reliability. The ARC is very strict on the safety equipment required and all of that equipment will come with the yacht. Also fitted are extra secure points and lifelines down each side.

When maintaining the yacht, everything has been done on the basis that if something goes wrong it could be dangerous. For that reason, every wire is tinned and correctly (or over)-specified and fused. The electrical connectors are not cheap. Every nut, bolt and washer is 316 stainless steel.

Apart from her fantastic seaworthiness, what we love most about NUNKY is the comfort. In 2020, due to Covid, we spent 8 months on the yacht without being able to leave the marina. The galley is fantastic and the salon is very comfortable. There is a very large fridge and also a very large freezer. They are both new in the last 6 years.

In 2021 we went hundreds of miles out of our way to a company that we knew made superb canopies for Amels. We had a canopy made that has many different configurations, including a basic short canopy to a full enclosure. The canopy can be easily adapted to the conditions by adding or removing panels. The full enclosure creates a large, sheltered space that is great for entertaining.
