Yacht broker Bill Rudkin caught the racing bug very early on in life and is proud to have numerous off shore races under his belt, including many Bermuda races as well as the 1975 and 1979 Fastnet Races.
He writes: “I sailed with my parents from a very young age. They were both keen sailors who enjoyed sailing at Pequot Yacht Club in Southport, Connecticut. Love of the sport has therefore been in my blood for as long as I can remember and has certainly helped shape my career.
In 1976, I started working with the America’s Cup Independence/Courageous Syndicate – a terrific start for a career in yachting. My years in yacht brokerage began later with Bartram and Brakenhoff, before I headed off to New York City to join the Sparkman and Stephens crew. I didn’t turn out to be much of a city boy and soon moved on to Ventura Yacht Service of Westbrook CT.
In the 1990s, I took a break from brokerage to run my own start up business, RUDS Inc., which specialised in sports apparel. Following 10 years of terrific fun and hard work, I decided to sell up and go back to yacht brokerage – selling powerboats with VENWEST of Seattle.
In 2001, I moved to Rhode Island as a yacht broker for Northrop & Johnson and then went on to open the Newport office for Merle Wood of Fort Lauderdale. And now the stage was set to join my longtime friends Jennifer Stewart and Alan Baines at Berthon USA!
I have always maintained my passion for racing, and have raced aboard Ker 50, TEMPTATION over the last 9 years. I also spend plenty of time outdoors as an avid waterfowler with my lovely black lab Willow.
I live in Portsmouth, RI with my wonderful partner Linn, who helps me every day survive the wild times of being a yacht broker! And the yachting legacy continues to the next generation of Rudkins, with my son having nearly completed two stints with AMERICAN MAGIC in the America’s Cup, as Head of New Zealand Operations for the team.
I look forward to many more years with Berthon USA.”
