Berthon’s Enduring Bond with Nautor Swan

The Berthon team have long held a deep appreciation for the Nautor Swan brand, recognising it as one of the world’s foremost yacht builders. Since its formation in 1966, Nautor Swan has established a name for excellent design, build and performance on the water. Through its enduring collaboration with iconic designers such as Sparkman & Stephens, Ron Holland, Germán Frers, and more recently Juan Kouyoumdjian, every generation of Nautor Swan yachts have provided the ultimate solution in cruiser racing, being equally at home both cruising and on the regatta circuit.

Many of the Berthon team have been closely involved both professionally and personally with the Nautor Swan Brand and they remain a firm favourite for us. Collectively, we hold a vast wealth of knowledge about these exceptional yachts — there’s little we don’t know about them!

Berthon & the Nautor Swan Brand

Following the restructuring of Nautor’s American offices in 1993, Jennifer Stewart of Berthon USA was the first female Nautor Swan sales agent. By 1998, she was their top-selling agent worldwide. With over a decade of experience already under her belt, Jennifer had risen through the ranks from administrative assistant to parts sales, while also organising Swan regattas and boat shows. There are few who know the brand better, and having made numerous trips yearly to Nautor, the team in Finland have become long lasting friends.

Alan Baines, also from Berthon USA, met his future business partner Jennifer at the Rolex Swan Regatta in Nantucket in 1993. At that time, he was working as a service manager with a yard on Cape Cod, but was ready to move into sales. Obviously good at his job, as he totally convinced Jennifer! His passion for the brand was sparked when he restored and sailed a hurricane-damaged Swan 431, an experience that cemented his lifelong connection to Swan yachts.

Berthon USA’s Peter Houghton grew up sailing in the UK and knows Swans inside out. And it was Alan and Jennifer who first introduced him to a Swan 60 owner nearly 25 years ago! Peter went on to captain a succession of Swans – first a 60, then a 68, and finally a 77 – managing extensive refits along the way. It was aboard that Swan 77, four years ago, that Peter met his wife Jeanie. He eventually stepped away from full-time captaining, and together he and Jeanie joined the Berthon USA team, shifting their focus to the sale of high quality brokerage yachts with Swan listings being a favourite.

Jonathan Banks, also from Berthon USA, has spent much of his sailing career aboard Swan yachts. His first experience aboard a Swan was on a friend’s Swan 48, sailing from Gibraltar to the Canary Islands. He loved the experience so much that he quit his day job to cruise the Caribbean on her for six months. Following this adventure, he was fortunate to be invited to skipper the Swan 57, TENARAZE. Over the next four years, he circumnavigated the globe, covering more than 50,000 miles, winning numerous regattas — including her class in the 1990 ARC — and visiting over 50 countries.

Our Palma de Mallorca broker, Simon Turner, has a long-standing association with the Swan brand. While based in Lymington from 1981 to 1991, he sold 20 Swan yachts—several with Jennifer—including a new-build 46 in collaboration with Swan Spain. These connections led Simon to relocate to Mallorca in 1991 to join Nautor’s sales office. From 1991 to 2003, Simon and his colleague Trevor sold over 100 pre-owned Swans. Although not a Nautor agent, between March 2003 and June 2006, Simon continued to sell many brokerage Swans—two of which (Swan 55s INDIGO and GEMM) are once again in his portfolio. From 2006 to 2011, Simon and his colleague Joost represented Nautor in Spain and Portugal under ‘Northrop & Johnson Spain’, combining Swan sales with general brokerage. Between 2003 and 2020, they sold over 90 pre-owned Swans. Since summer 2020, we’ve been delighted to have Simon back with Berthon International in Palma, bringing exceptional expertise in Swans, the broader yacht market, and the Mediterranean region.

Andrew Fairbrass, Managing Director of Berthon Spain’s Service Division, holds deep respect for Swan yachts. He spent three years as captain aboard a Swan 68, which he had previously helped refit. Now land-based in Palma, he continues to oversee the refit and servicing of Swan yachts, along with many other prestigious brands. A new Swan 65—which Andrew has also captained—has come under guardiennage with Berthon Spain this year.

Forever a firm favourite, it is no wonder so many Swans grace our brokerage pages.
