As a yacht enthusiast fortunate enough to sail a wide array of vessels for my day job, I’ve had the pleasure of testing some truly remarkable yachts. One of the most memorable and enjoyable sea trials I carried out this summer was aboard Cherubini 44 Cutter, METEOR. For anyone who relishes the pure joy of sailing, this yacht stands out as a perfect example of harmony between vessel and sea. Reaching through the Solent’s Hurst Narrows against an ebb tide, METEOR’s fine entry, long keel profile, and keel-hung rudder allow her to track as if on rails, gracefully cutting through the water with a gentle nod of her bows.
METEOR is a yacht with an impressive pedigree and a rich history of ocean voyaging. She has been carefully maintained by dedicated and experienced owners, who have cruised her extensively throughout the Caribbean, the Bahamas, the eastern seaboard of the United States, Ireland, Scotland, and she has several trans-Atlantic crossings beneath her keel. Accepted in the Spirit of Tradition class, METEOR has also competed in the Antigua Classics.
In 1991, her interior was fully restored at Berthon Boat Company in Lymington, and she underwent a major refit in Canada between 2019 and 2021 to prepare for her transatlantic adventures. This year, METEOR has received numerous key upgrades, including new standing rigging, a new cutlass bearing, sanitation hose and valve replacements, and fresh house batteries.
METEOR is equipped with a tall rig and an extended sail area thanks to her bowsprit, boosting her overall length from 44 feet (LOD) to 50 feet (LOA). This allows her to perform beautifully upwind in both moderate and light winds. In stronger winds, her three reef points on the mainsail and robust roller furling headsails make reefing simple and efficient. With the help of a Brunton propeller, METEOR is quick under sail, regularly hitting 8 knots.
Below decks, METEOR boasts a warm and inviting interior with cherry wood panelling. Her layout is not only spacious but also well-lit, thanks to a beautiful midships butterfly hatch and numerous ports and hatches. The design is comparable to that of a traditional working vessel, with pilot berths integrated to maximize shared space.
The interior is split 75:25 between the aft and forward deckhouses. The aft deckhouse features the owner’s pilot berth, a navigation station, galley, settees, and additional pilot berths to port and starboard.
The forward deckhouse contains the head and a separate shower compartment, offering ample privacy and convenience.
METEOR is a meticulously maintained yacht, that has been constantly updated and deeply cherished by her owners. She’s a modern yet classic bluewater cruiser, admired in every port she visits. Ideal for a globetrotting couple or family, METEOR is the perfect blend of beauty, capability, and performance, and she is ready for any ocean adventure.
Currently, METEOR is winterized and laid up ashore at Berthon’s Lymington HQ as her owners plan their next adventure. This stunning yacht is now offered for sale, presenting a unique opportunity for someone new to take the helm of this sure-footed, ocean-going gem.
