Dale Nelson 38 Aft Cabin, CHAMOIS in Brokerage Captivity and on Film
April 21st, 2022
The Dale Nelson 38 flowed from the drawing board of TT Boat Designs back in 1993, and since has been much beloved for commercial pilot-boat use, and as a base for an exceptionally seaworthy semi-displacement leisure cruiser. With more beam than her predecessors, and built under license to an exceptional level of finish by Dale’s shipwrights in deepest Pembrokeshire, the Nelson 38 is very much a modern classic and commands a huge amount of respect from Owners and admirers alike.
CHAMOIS is a 2001 example of the more popular Aft Cabin version and in her second ownership from new. Watch her movie here –
She sits handsomely in the water, with smart varnished teak badging setting off the low, lean lines of her lustrous flag blue hull. Her broad decks are laid in original teak, which is now requiring attention after twenty years of sterling service, and her stout guardrails ring the working deck securely, with low amidships gunwales making short work of boarding and disembarking. The external helm’s position to port is just ideal for helming, and especially during berthing, this raised position gives both excellent visibility, and is very sociable under way – with supportive helm and navigators seats located behind a protective windscreen. She carries a 2.8m RIB tender on a pair of substantial stainless steel Simpson davits fitted to her transom, which is simple to launch and recover, and has a recently serviced liferaft on her foredeck cradle.
Below decks, she is built in satin-varnished European Oak joinery (and it is superbly well–executed), with blond wool carpets and cream leather upholstery. Her layout provides for a comfortable, light upper saloon, with twin pilot seats forward, a forward en-suite cabin with v-berth, galley and cosy dinette abaft of the cabin, and aft there is a separate companionway leading to her aft cabin. Being the later interior layout, she benefits from an island double berth and roomy aft en-suite with electric head, shower and basin – all very practical with plenty of stowage space. The whole design revolves around longer-term comfort on board, and she is equipped with heating, generator and air-conditioning.
Engine-wise she is fitted with the twin Yanmar 420HP set-up – providing plenty of power to drive her along, and her tachometers read low hours, with a recent (2021) overhaul and agent service history.
Through the water this hull really excels, with that fine forefoot cleaving smoothly upwind, and her well-found rounded underwater sections throwing weather aside with ease. Her substantial centre keel not only allows her to track straight at lower speeds, but it keeps her remarkably stable in the turn as well as providing a low centre of gravity for her fuel tanks.
