Discovery 55 VELA VEE, from Discovery Yachts Ltd., first launched in 2003 and is in her second ownership. She has the benefit of being only sailed in Europe and the UK since new. The Discovery 55 was designed by Ron Holland and built in the UK. Each Discovery 55, since hull #001, has been built with no expensive spared and this is obvious as soon as you step on-board VELA VEE.
Over the years, the Discovery 55 has become famous within the sailing community for excellent trade wind sailing, easy sailing with limited crew and overall safety.
During her ownerships, Discovery 55 VELA VEE has always been very well looked after, with constant maintenance and having recently enjoyed several updates done here at Berthon’s Lymington HQ, including:
All saloon windows replaced with Houdini frameless windows.
All new Raymarine navigation equipment.
Saloon seating area reupholstered.
4 x 260Ah 12v gel batteries replaced.
Hull and topside polished, fresh antifoul & new anodes.
All seacocks replaced.
Extensive engine maintenance.
All standing rigging replaced 2017.
Having only been sailed in local waters and not used to cross any oceans just yet, down below Discovery 55 VELA VEE has the feel of a much newer yacht. In the saloon, she has the traditional Mark 1 layout with a large circular seating area. This offers a true deck saloon with panoramic views and dining table for seven people to sit comfortably or fold down to coffee table size. In the same space, you have the raised full sized chart table giving excellent visibility while at sea.
To aft VELA VEE has a generous homely en-suite owner’s cabin. This offers a private space with a king size centreline double mattress replaced 2021, en-suite heads and walk in shower, plus good access to the engine room and other equipment.
The linear galley has excellent space with a 3-burner cooker – while the deep freeze and fridge is simply cavernous.
There is also good dry storage, giving plenty of space to keep food and drink for those long voyages. Forward she has a generous upper and lower berth cabin to port. To starboard, there is a guest head with separated shower, which the port cabin shares with the forward double VIP cabin.
On deck, she offers the well-known Discovery Solent rig with self-tacking jib, forward genoa and electric in mast furling. All sails can be easily handled from the cockpit with no need for crew to go on deck.
Overall Discovery 55 VELA VEE is a superb cruising yacht that was been thoughtfully specified for long distance family cruising. She has succeeded admirably in this role and has been carefully maintained throughout her life. She now awaits her next adventures.
