Pegasus Yachts, a bluewater sailing yacht manufacturer, has appointed Pip Hare, one of the most respected women solo offshore sailors in the world, as a shorthanded bluewater sailing consultant.
Pip, who completed the Vendée Globe single-handed non-stop round-the-world race and sailed over 800 miles on a jury rig following a catastrophic dismasting during her second campaign in 2024, brings a level of offshore experience that few sailors can match. Her appointment will see her work directly with the Pegasus Yachts team to review the bluewater and short-handed capabilities of the Pegasus 50, and to feed her expertise into the company’s ongoing design of Pegasus 67 and future development programme.
Marko Paš, Co-Founder, of Pegasus Yachts said: “Pip represents exactly the kind of offshore expertise we want at the table when we are making decisions about how our yachts perform, how simple they are to handle, and how they keep their crews comfortable and safe at sea. Her experience of sailing alone in the most extreme conditions gives her an insight into yacht design that is simply impossible to replicate in any other way. We are proud to have her working with us.”
Pip Hare said: “Racing alone across oceans has given me a deep insight into how the design and quality of a boat affects not only overall sailing performance, but also how secure we feel and how much we are able to enjoy the voyages we make. Details matter. It is clear to see that Pegasus Yachts are built with the same philosophy in mind, to ensure the boats are equipped to provide comfort, performance and security wherever they may end up in the world. I am excited to be able to work with the Pegasus team and to bring my own knowledge and experience as a sailor to the table, and to help find ways to keep improving the boats and the sailing experience. It’s going to be an adventure.”
The collaboration reflects Pegasus Yachts’ commitment to building bluewater yachts that perform at the highest level, with a particular focus on the needs of short-handed crews. The Pegasus 50, the company’s current production yacht, is designed for offshore passagemaking and is capable of being sailed effectively by a small crew or a single-handed sailor. The yard’s newly announced Pegasus 67 is the continuation of this philosophy, and is at the bleeding edge of shorthanded sailing.
As Miha Breskvar, Co-founder, of Pegasus Yachts explains: “We are certain that the concept of owner-sailed shorthanded cruising still works on a yacht the size of the Pegasus 67 , and we partnered with Pip to ensure that we stay true to this creed. Pegasus was always about easy, and quick passage-making”.
Pip Hare’s offshore career includes two Vendée Globe campaigns, multiple transatlantic crossings, and extensive experience in short-handed offshore racing at the highest level. She is widely recognised not only for her sailing achievements but for her ability to communicate the realities of offshore sailing to a broad audience.
Ben Cooper – Pegasus New Yachts Sales at Berthon Sales Group said: “Great news that Pip Hare is joining the Pegasus team as a consultant, to provide exactly the right input from years of experience sailing shorthanded in the most hostile of elements to optimise this groundbreaking new design, intended to be sailed single, or shorthanded, something that even only a few years ago would never be considered in a 67ft cruising yacht. We are excited to see the development of this model that will upset the traditional world of heavy displacement 60ft bluewater yachts”.
