Sou’wester 51 Competition, MOMENTUM – Hinckley’s finest, is for sale
December 30th, 2022
Sou’wester 51 Competition, MOMENTUM first splashed in 1993, she was built to race, but with a very comfortable cruising interior in high gloss cherry. Her hull is hand layup Kevlar over Airex foam core with a Kevlar and S glass deck. Hinckley don’t compromise on interior joinery which has a lot of solid wood and beautiful veneers.
This walk through video shows how she looks today:
As a new yacht, she participated in Bermuda and Marblehead-Halifax races, and cruised the Caribbean in the winters. MOMENTUM raced annually to Bermuda whilst on the East Coast of the USA. Her best result was in 2019 – second in class and 5th in fleet! Her owner later added a Leisure Furl boom for easy, short-handed sailing. Her second owner changed her keel, reducing the draft from 9’6” to 7’5”. The new keel was designed by Jim Taylor. At the same time, he improved her with a new elliptical rudder with stainless stock and he also added a watermaker.
In 2011 her current owner purchased her. He sails her shorthanded or single handed and she has cruised extensively on the East coast of the USA with him, as well as crossing the Atlantic and cruising in Scotland and the South coast of the UK.
MOMENTUM has been much updated in his ownership including new electronics, carbon bowsprit, autopilot and importantly a new triple spreader carbon rig from Offshore Spars in 2021.
She has electric primaries and a Harken electric genoa furler. These with her Leisurefurl boom make her easy to single hand. She has runners but these are only used when the staysail is being used and at a wind strength of over 25 knots.
MOMENTUM is around 3000lb lighter than any of her sister-ships and her new carbon mast delivers a gentle motion. She is very stiff and the new mast which is 5 feet taller than the original allows for increased sail area which has greatly improved light and medium airs performance.
The yacht has a large and social aft cockpit and wide safe side decks. With no teak decks, she is easy to look after and her flag green topsides livery looks stunning.
Below she has a spacious and light main saloon with owners’ cabin forward. This has its own en-suite heads and shower. There is a very large double cabin aft for guests and another heads and shower compartment that also doubles as a day head. Her galley is to starboard next to the companionway – in the perfect place when you are at sea.
MOMENTUM is now wearing her overall winter cover and is available to see and touch at our yard in Lymington, UK. She is not VAT paid so she is in our Customs Warehouse.
