With the clocks having sprung forward, the lawns growing at an alarming rate (well mine in any case…), early morning birdsong and the promise of warmer days to come, the boatyard is busy and the buzz of excitement for the dawning season is here at last.
We thought we should show you what has been going on in Plymouth with the immaculately-presented Seaward 35, BRUISER (being a go-anywhere, at anytime, kind of proposition, you may remember that she also featured in an earlier Berthon blog on her voyage to Scotland in 2023). She was kitted out with new safety kit for this trip – with Offshore raft, EPIRB, rescue sling and flares – so she is truly ready to go and stretch her legs again – and as her Owner recounted “BRUISER excelled herself and never missed a beat.” Her twin Yanmar engines have proved entirely reliable, displaying sensible hours backed up by annual servicing, and give a substantial range of c 275 NM at a fast cruise of 18 knots, with a decent reserve.
Originally built to an exacting standard, she has been lovingly cared for by each of her three owners. Her current custodians have devoted a decade to maintaining and enjoying this remarkably capable semi-displacement seaboat. Highlights include the aforementioned 1,500-nautical-mile voyage from Plymouth, through the Irish Sea via Dublin and Belfast, onward to Craobh Haven—her base for extensive cruising around the Western Isles—before returning home via Milford Haven. She has always performed flawlessly and her condition would shame many a much newer boat, so not only do you get Seaward Marine’s superlative boat-building know-how, but also a remarkably fresh interior that will continue to look good many moons hence.
As the drone footage shows, the Arthur Mursell-drawn hull of the 35 is easily-driven through broken water, yet remains nimble and lithe both through higher-speed turns, and whilst berthing in harbour.
With a substantial keel to hold her on course at lower revs, she is a delight to handle from the helm, and her crew will benefit from her broad decks, solid custom-style grab rails, and the low nature of her gunwales means best safe and accessibility – and there is no nervous jump down from her onto the dock.
Being both large enough to accommodate a crew of four (although a Nelson will never be the biggest in terms of interior volume), yet handy enough to be handled with ease by two (or even one) – the Seaward 35 is a remarkably proficient performer. Until you have let that knife-like bow loose, and cleaved softly upwind – relaxed in your KAB suspension seat (they really are the business), you cannot understand how superb these hulls are at sea – where it really matters – until you have experienced it.
Below decks BRUISER can accommodate five guests with a comfy V-berth with infill in the owners’ fwd cabin, double berth conversion in dinette, and an extra berth in the wheelhouse.
So if you are looking for a robustly-built, well-engineered and great-looking seaboat that will look after you and your crew when the chips are down, please do contact us for an appointment to view this seriously accomplished and , semi-displacement cruiser.
