Sue Grant chats with the legendary Steve Dashew about FPB Motor Yachts
November 4th, 2021
…and life after the FPB programme.
Here at Berthon International we have been working with Steve and Linda Dashew for many years, and still work with them today – supporting the brokerage market for the FPB motor yachts fleet of 18 hulls. We also keep close tabs on the Dashew sailing yachts fleet.
The FPB programme closed a couple of years ago – when Linda and Steve decided to retire. This has been a far from a feet up and slippers exercise, as in addition to being on hand to assist with the Dashew designed sailing and motor yachts out there, there has been a land yacht project – so now there is a truck with an interior, not dissimilar to an FPB! And to go with it, a military style RIB (great for the lakes in the Arizona area) and plenty of stunning photography.
Of course, the yachting world is still of huge interest so design developments such as those being seen in the America’s Cup and other performance events are closely watched by Steve and Linda.
A life time of meeting and encouraging people into the industry and watching them develop as sailors, designers, technicians (and even yacht brokers!) has not stopped and so there is much more mentoring and support from the Dashews happening right now than you might think.
In amongst all this, Steve keeps a weather eye on the market segment in which the FPB fleet finds itself and the new product that is starting to appear on the market. He offers some advice on what to look for in a new explorer yacht and the importance of the comfort of the yacht’s crew at sea.
It is always difficult to second-guess the way that the market, fashion and yacht usage will go. We sense a quiet confidence that there is nothing out there that is very similar to the FPB fleet – not in terms of look (these days there is plenty of bare metal out there) but certainly in capability and the ability for crew to be comfortable over long passage periods
We hope that you will enjoy this podcast with Steve Dashew and we hope to bring you updates and additions to it from time to time.
