Broker’s Comments

The Mark Ellis–designed Bruckmann 50 has a unique place in the marketplace and is still in production today. FLY AWAY is hull 9 of 11 built to date and is a MKII version, featuring a longer waterline and an integral swim platform.

Her exterior boasts a metallic silver-grey Awlgrip–painted hull, varnished toerails and brightwork, and fiberglass non-skid decks with contrasting patterns. The cockpit is spacious, with high coamings, a varnished drop-leaf table, and an outside steering station aft. A bimini provides sun protection, while a stainless arch carries solar panels and incorporates the dinghy davits.

Step inside to the beautifully finished “Herreshoff look” interior, with white bulkheads and gloss-varnished mahogany trim. The deckhouse has a spacious U-shaped settee to port, upholstered in Ultrasuede, around a hi/low table, and two-barrel chairs to starboard. The forward chair raises and lowers electrically to become the helm seat, providing excellent forward visibility.

Most of the electronics have been replaced in recent years, and the boat is equipped with Starlink.

Descend three steps to the lower saloon, where you’ll find a U-shaped galley to port with a large front- and top-loading fridge, freezer, microwave, three-burner Force 10 stove with oven, and Corian countertops. Opposite to starboard is an office/library nook with an L-shaped settee and infill cushion to create an extra berth—the perfect place to relax, enjoy some quiet time, or watch a movie on the flat-screen TV.

Continuing forward along the passageway, there is a double-berth guest cabin to starboard and two separate heads to port, which share a common shower. Furthest forward is the owner’s stateroom, featuring a king-size vee berth and ample storage. All overhead hatches are fitted with screens and blinds, and all ports are opening.

FLY AWAY is powered by the optional 200 hp John Deere engine with only 3,460 hours—which, in John Deere terms, is barely broken in. Engine access is excellent, both beneath the saloon sole and from the front behind the stairs.

While the Bruckmann 50 is a motorsailer, she sails exceptionally well. She carries a roller-furling 130% genoa on a massive double-roller bowsprit, and the mainsail is easily managed with a Leisurefurl boom. The boat has a new set of Doyle sails, and the entire mast was serviced in 2025.

FLY AWAY has been meticulously maintained throughout her life, stored indoors for most winters, and is ready for more cruising adventures!

Owner’s Comments

FLY AWAY has been our home and the headquarters for the Devereux Ocean Foundation in our mission to nurture ocean research, education, and stewardship. She has carried us on many extended cruises from New England to the Bahamas.

As former sailboat racers, we have owned many boats—but this one stands above the rest. Her outstanding good looks draw admirers wherever we go. She sails happily along at 8.5 knots, whether under sail or powered by her mighty John Deere engine. With copious storage and comfortable accommodations for both owner and guests, she provides an ideal environment for extended cruising and living aboard.
