The Discovery 55 remains one of the most respected and admired bluewater cruisers of her generation. Built with exceptional strength and integrity, she has the reassuring feel of a true ocean-going yacht – solid, capable, and ready for serious passage-making, yet she remains responsive and rewarding to sail, even when not perfectly trimmed by me.

With generous water and fuel capacity, she offers impressive range and autonomy. Her versatile sail plan, including twin headsails and spinnaker poles, allows her to perform confidently across a wide range of conditions, making passage-making both efficient and enjoyable.

KINGFISHER is a yacht I know intimately, having sailed and cared for her since she was nearly new. She has always been a pleasure to spend time aboard. Under her original ownership since new, she has completed significant voyages, including two trips from the UK to the Med, an Atlantic crossing, and the RORC Caribbean 600, proving both her capability and comfort offshore.

For the past seven years, she has cruised the Mediterranean, providing her owners with safe, comfortable, and rewarding sailing – always with the quiet confidence that comes from being aboard a truly exceptional yacht.

Now, KINGFISHER is ready for her next custodians – and the adventures that await.

Owner’s Comments

I saw my first Discovery 55 in Las Palmas at the start of the 2007 ARC, which I sailed with friends in my Sweden 42. I knew immediately that this was a boat that I wanted to own. Five years later, I was launching KINGFISHER in Southampton, having commissioned her to fulfil every element of comfort and seaworthiness that had been missing on my first Atlantic crossing. In 2013, she lived up to all of my dreams and expectations as I took my son, Ben, and a couple of his close friends across the Atlantic on a three-month trip from Menorca to Grenada.

In 2014, I achieved another ambition with KINGFISHER by completing the RORC Caribbean 600 race. We were not the fastest yacht in the race, but we made it round a challenging course in style and comfort! Since then, KINGFISHER was based in Palma (looked after by Andrew and his team) for five years, came back to the UK during COVID, and then returned to the eastern Med for the subsequent five years, cruising with family and friends mainly in Croatia and the Ionian.

KINGFISHER has created wonderful memories for our whole family and friendship group, performed brilliantly, and delivered on all of her promised long-distance cruising capabilities. She is safe and comfortable in all conditions and has been much admired wherever she goes.
