Broker’s Comments

The owners and builders of the Ocean Voyager 70, TARA, have created a series of Explorers that have won hearts and minds across the world. Over the years, we have always looked forward to the next project, confident that she would be a capable world-cruising yacht, born of years of long-distance cruising experience and expertise. TARA is easily managed by a small crew and has the range and capability to enable her to cruise far, in safety and comfort.

Her foundation is a robust GRP SCRIMP hull with sailing-boat lines, bearing some similarities to a previous Ocean Voyager – ACHARNE – which was a marriage of sailing-yacht design principles with excellent sea-keeping and fast passage times.

TARA has been fitted out with generous exterior spaces, a large and comfortable pilothouse, a lower saloon, and practical accommodation for up to ten crew. With a range of 1,400 nautical miles, she has long legs, complemented by her aluminium superstructure and light, airy interiors. She also features a practical flybridge area and can be easily managed from within the deck saloon.

2025 has seen a re-worked helm position which makes her flybridge work brilliantly and provides a great place for exterior steering fully protected from the elements whether UV or otherwise

TARA is in turnkey condition and ready to cruise. She offers tremendous capability, endurance and comfort at an extremely modest price.

Owner’s Comments

The Ocean Voyager 70, TARA, was built to specifications informed by experience gained from thousands of miles of cruising. The builders have logged well over 100,000 miles of world cruising in both sailboats and powerboats. TARA was conceived as the ultimate two-person cruising yacht, yet her five-stateroom layout and very voluminous interior allow the owners to accommodate family, friends, or crew. She is designed and constructed as a rugged trawler yacht.

Ocean Voyager previously rebuilt and cruised the famous 32 metre explorer PINK SHRIMP as well as the former racing sailing yacht SAGAMORE, which became ACHARNE in their ownership and the Expedition Catamaran ROGUE.

Sailing hulls make excellent powerboats. They are faster, more efficient, have less windage, are more comfortable at sea, and are easier to manage in adverse conditions. TARA was originally conceived as a twin engined motorsailor. The hull was strengthened for higher latitude cruising.

The original hull was built by a prestigious New England shipyard. It was then shipped to Canada, where it was completely redesigned and finished, incorporating the lessons learned from ACHARNE.

Our Rules of Construction

  1. The vessel must be strong enough to endure the worst conditions.
  2. All systems must be rugged, proven, and dependable; the choice of equipment and systems is of utmost importance.
  3. All systems must be easily accessible, reducing future problems, maintenance, and repairs.
  4. The vessel must be as economical as possible: money spent on fuel is money not spent cruising. Achieving zero generator time at anchor is one of Ocean Voyager’s benchmarks. Without air conditioning and with adequate sunlight, the boat can anchor without running any generator.
  5. The vessel must be suitable for long-term liveaboard cruising, featuring large solar systems, excellent ventilation, superior anchoring gear, abundant water storage, good insulation, low maintenance, low power consumption, and practical, efficient systems.
