DORADO OF BEAULIEU is a stunning example of a 2002 Oyster 62, which is one of the most highly regarded bluewater cruising yachts built by Oyster Yachts. Designed by the world-renowned naval architect Rob Humphreys, she combines exceptional offshore capability with luxurious accommodation, making her a favourite amongst long-distance cruising sailors around the world. Measuring 19.3 metres (63 feet) overall with a beam of 5.4 metres, DORADO offers impressive interior volume without compromising on sailing performance.
One of the defining features of DORADO is her deck saloon design, which provides panoramic views from the main living space while allowing abundant natural light throughout her interior. The spacious cockpit, featuring twin helm stations, offers fabulous security and excellent visibility, providing the highest level of comfort during extended passages. This arrangement is particularly well-suited to family cruising and short-handed sailing.
Below deck, DORADO features a four-cabin layout that accommodates up to eight guests, showcasing high-quality, handcrafted joinery in teak. Spacious cabins, generous storage, multiple heads, and a well-equipped galley make the yacht ideal for bluewater cruising. The owner’s cabin benefits from exceptional privacy and comfort, reflecting Oyster’s reputation for luxury craftsmanship.
Under sail, she is fast, balanced, and confidence inspiring. Her cutter rig, long waterline, and moderate displacement allow for effortless, long-distance mile-munching, with daily runs exceeding 200 nautical miles achievable in favourable conditions.
Today, the Oyster 62 remains one of the most sought-after luxury cruising yachts on the brokerage market. Her combination of seaworthiness, timeless styling, build quality, and long-range cruising capability has earned her a reputation as one of the finest bluewater sailing yachts ever produced.
All in all, DORADO is a fabulous boat and stands ready for her next lucky owner.
We were familiar with Oyster yachts and 62s, so when we heard about DORADO, we were interested, especially as she had already survived hurricane Ivan, proving she is a strong boat.
We bought DORADO with a possible second circumnavigation in mind and undertook a significant refit at Berthon in 2016/17, including new standing and running rigging. We reached the Caribbean in 2017 but then a combination of Covid-19 and grandchildren meant changing our plans to using DORADO as a fast and comfortable Caribbean cruising home for the two of us over the winter months.
DORADO really is fast, even when not trying hard and allows for long passages all in daylight and always with just the two of us on board. The push button sail control hydraulics, and electric winches make sailing her two up straightforward, even when berthing in tight marinas. The large cockpit is a sheltered and comfortable place to entertain friends, to watch as DORADO overtakes other yachts on passage and to relax on arrival at the end of the day but if the sunshine turns liquid, the airy saloon provides another space for up to eight to dine in comfort. We have found that her large tank capacity, reliable generator and water maker, coupled with large fridge and freezer allows for long periods independent of marinas, enjoying the comparative peace of anchorages.
To make that a reliable option, we undertook a second round of refitting, including new generator, watermaker, anchor and anchor windlass. Today we think the updated DORADO feels newer than when we first saw her ten years ago, but after having DORADO for longer than any yacht we have ever owned before, it is time for someone else to enjoy sailing her.
