What a piece of kit Hardy built. You can tell that this Hardy Commodore 50 DOLPHIN OF PLYMOUTH has some heavy commercial heritage behind her, from the size of the stringers and ribs on show in her inner hull, to the heated screens, which allow a mist-free, clear view over her decks from the inner helm. Her sea-kindly hull allows a smooth, damped ride through confused seas that would keep similar hard-chined boats in dock, and thus her passage-making potential is far better.
Her Andrew Wolstenholme hull features blade-like forward sections that cleave the water neatly in twain, whilst flicking it astray with vim and vigour. She is solid as a rock (as you should expect from her 27 tons light loading…) as she passes through broken water and is thus able to maintain a speed at a level of comfort that would see any planing hull stopped dead in the water.
DOLPHIN is hull three of the eight Hardy 50s to have come out of the Hardy sheds in North Walsham, prior to the welcome takeover of the Hardy brand by Mylor’s Cockwells Ltd., and has enjoyed three competent ownerships since build in 2005. She has a pair of reliable CAT C12 diesels and will achieve a top speed of 27 knots if required, or slip along at 6 knots for a fuel burn in the single figures (litres per hour). Her machinery is housed behind a watertight bulkhead door, as you would expect from a proper commercial seagoing vessel, and she has useful utility and study areas, as well as six berths in three cabins.
Brokerage craft in this condition, with a Class A rating, are rare – especially in the current used yacht climate. She is, and will make, a quite superb cruising motor yacht for those who do not wish to be pegged back by a bit of breeze. She is offered to the market in sparkling condition – and her engine room is in a stunningly good state. With a complete set of instruction manuals and extensive service records, an excellent pedigree, exceptional volume, and ability for her size, she is a complete joy to be on board, and a privilege to show.
I have owned DOLPHIN for 10 years and cruised extensively along the UK East, South and West Coasts, the French Channel coast, and inland in the Netherlands and Belgium. Her seakeeping is excellent in all conditions – immensely strong throughout, with engines and systems to match; she has been a joy to spend time on.
I tend to cruise at around 14 knots, which gives a very comfortable passage and good economic performance – but I can confirm 27 knots is easily reached. She handles brilliantly both at sea and in port, turning 360 degrees in her own length. We found her to be extraordinarily comfortable, with loads of space for relaxing – the view from the flybridge is superb at sea, as well as being great for entertaining when moored up.
I have constantly upgraded all navigation equipment and had her professionally serviced, washed, and polished regularly. A comprehensive range of spare parts is on board and included, along with all manuals and service history.
As I am now into my eighties, it is time to reluctantly pass her to the next lucky owner.
