Broker’s Comments

WESTRALIA is a stunning example of the Discovery 57, benefiting from single ownership from new and an exceptionally generous maintenance programme, keeping her operating and meticulously presented to the highest standards.

Unlike many Discovery Yachts, WESTRALIA has been lightly used throughout her life, cruising exclusively in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. She combines Ron Holland’s elegant lines with the spectacular elliptical windows of the deck saloon, which flood the interior with natural light.

Her programme of continual upgrades most notably includes a beautiful set of 2024 North 3Di Ocean 700 sails. These are professionally serviced and washed annually and, importantly, dry-stored throughout the winter. She is also equipped with a North G2 cruising chute with snuffer, complete with sheets and blocks.

Her striking topsides, finished in ‘White’ with a Cavita line picked out in gold tape and a blue boot-top line, give WESTRALIA an unmistakably elegant appearance. She is every bit as attractive at anchor as she is under sail.

Inside, the light oak and cherry interior is beautifully finished, incorporating fine marquetry and clever use of burr veneers. The result is a warm, elegant and highly practical interior perfectly suited to a yacht designed for serious bluewater cruising.

WESTRALIA represents a particularly well-cared-for and lightly used example of this highly regarded Discovery model. Beautifully presented, comprehensively equipped and ready to cruise, she is now awaiting her next fortunate owner.

We look forward to welcoming you on board for a personal inspection.

Owner’s Comments

Coming from Australia, I decided, before turning 60 in 2013, to purchase a yacht to explore the Mediterranean, on the basis that if I waited until I retired, it would probably never happen. After reviewing the options, it came down to either the new Oyster 575 or the Discovery 57. I visited both Oyster and Discovery in early 2012.

What particularly appealed to me about Discovery was the level of in-house capability, right down to laminating the timber in the factory. At Discovery, there was a real sense of ownership and pride amongst the tradespeople, which was very evident during my visit. Furthermore, the service offered was highly personalised, with Discovery employee John Eustace assisting me in selecting the various options available, including the list of critical spares.

I wanted a solid, safe and reliable yacht, equipped with all the creature comforts, given that it would be my home for several weeks each year. Ease of shorthanded sailing was also important, as most of my guests would not be experienced sailors. To that end, the electric foresail furling and electric in-mast furling make sail handling very safe and comfortable. One exceptional feature is the electric boom traveller, which makes mainsail adjustments underway very easy.

Whilst I always avoided difficult conditions where possible, from time to time the winds were against us. On all those occasions, the bluewater capability of the yacht allowed those conditions to be managed safely and comfortably.

The plan was always to spend each year exploring the Mediterranean, working from Gibraltar and then heading east. The different countries, cultures, foods, wines and history offered an inexhaustible number of possibilities. And so it has been that each year, with family and friends, we undertook these once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

The first leg, in 2013, in the brand-new yacht, took us from Southampton across to Guernsey and then on to Gibraltar. Given my limited experience with the new yacht, Discovery employees John Eustace and engineer Steve Huxter accompanied me and two friends across to Gibraltar.

The yacht has been a life experience, never to be repeated, providing a magical home on the water and all the comforts needed to undertake leisurely travel wherever we chose to go. The large fuel capacity, watermaker and washing machine allowed us a degree of independence from marinas.

For me, it was never about rushing from A to B. It was about enjoying the moment, wherever possible at anchor in a beautiful bay, going swimming and then taking the dinghy ashore to experience the local cuisine and wine. Alternatively, we could tie stern-to on a town quay and simply walk ashore to find a local taverna.

When the journey started, in my 60th year in 2013, we had four children and no grandchildren, so having family come across each year was relatively straightforward. Moving on to 2026, I am now 73 and we have eight grandchildren, aged from a few months to ten years old. Having family travel across from Australia is now no longer practical given their commitments at home.

It is therefore with some reluctance, but also with immense gratitude for the experiences she has given us, that I have decided to sell this beautiful yacht. She has served us exceptionally well and provided our family and friends with memories that will stay with us for the rest of our lives.
