LATOBE was penultimate Oyster 72s to launch and is presently in her second ownership, during which she was totally refitted to make her ready for the Oyster World Rally which she participated in with great success, providing fast and reliable passage times and great comfort for her crew and guests.
She has been skipper maintained and is now being offered for sale as the circumnavigation is completed and family calls.
Most of her systems are from 2020/21 and she offers the perfect balance between easy handling with her automated rig, excellent performance and masses of space below and on deck to accommodate crew and 6 onboard guests in great comfort.
LATOBE is an exceptional example of her class and is offered in full cruising trim with a full array of spares, tools and equipment. She is ready for bluewater sailing.
When we made the decision to sail around the world we owned a 58-foot Gunfleet, which was a great cruising yacht but lacked the space we needed for full time crew and our guests. We wanted a yacht that was big enough to entertain comfortably, that was safe, reliable and that would deliver fast passage times. Having looked at the market carefully, we selected the Oyster 72 as the right size and configuration for us. LATOBE was in great original shape and the perfect basis for our plans.
We purchased her in the UK and the first job was to replace all the through hull fittings, drop and service the rudder, replacing the rudder bearings, and to install electrically controlled valves so that we could have easy control of key seacocks. We also installed C-Zone that gives us control of LATOBE’s systems at each screen. We made many other upgrades: a hydraulic passerelle, electronics (e.g. new Axiom screens, fast Iridium satellite), rig, sails, covers, a full refurbishment of the teak deck, new anchors and chain and much more. We wanted LATOBE to be a trouble-free platform for our voyage and so she was.
LATOBE has proven to be an outstanding cruiser, delivering 200+ nautical miles consistently with a 300 day in the mix! Adverse weather conditions were handled effortlessly with safe handling from the cockpit. Because of her speed we could outrun weather systems and we never had doubts about the yacht’s abilities.
We have loved LATOBE for her strength, performance, and the generous space she offered us and our guests. She is a fast cruiser and a wonderful platform for entertaining the host of guests encountered on the Oyster World Rally. Sub aqua diving in the Galapagos was spectacular (she has a dive compressor and tanks aboard). Of all the upgrades, the forward-looking echo sounder was a standout piece of kit for exploring tricky areas.
Now that we have completed our adventure, we must focus on our newly arrived grandchildren, which is why we now offer her for sale. She is a great boat ready to circumnavigate again. It will be a wrench to say goodbye but duty calls.
